NEW YORK, N.Y. -- Cornell and Columbia split a Sunday softball doubleheader, with each team jumping out to early 3-0 leads. Neither held, and both teams were able to put together comeback wins. The Big Red lost game one 6-3, then rallied in the seventh for a 5-3 victory to win the four-game series over the Lions. The Big Red improved to 12-21 (6-10 Ivy), while the Lions slipped to 14-24 (6-10 Ivy).
Game OneThe Big Red couldn't hold on to a 3-0 first inning lead, with a
Megan Murray two-run double highlighting the frame. It was all Lions the rest of the way, as Cornell had just three hits over the final six innings. COrnell was able to bring the tying run to the plate in the seventh, but couldn't push the runs over.
Tonia Wu allowed only the six hits and three earned runs to improve to 7-11 on the year.
Emily Weinberg went 2-for-4 with a run scored and Murray had two of the team's three RBI, all driven in by freshmen.
Tori Togashi had the other run driven in.
Game TwoCornell scored three in the sixth inning and two in the seventh to rally past the Lions and take three of our games in the weekend set. The Big Red took advantage of 11 hits and four Columbia errors.
The Big Red trailed 3-0 heading into the sixth, faling to dent the scoreboard and leaving eight runners on base. It finally broke through, tying the game on a bases loaded hit batter by McGivney, a Columbia error and an infield single by
Megan Murray. Columbia threatened to go ahead in the bottom of the inning, putting two runners on with no outs. Orcutt induced a grounder, picked up a strikeout and popped the third batter out to end the frame.
The visitors took their first lead in the top of the seventh, working some two-out magic.
Leanne Iannucci doubled,
Zoe Hernandez singled to score her and then came around on a McGivney single down the rightfield line.
Columbia opened its half of the seventh with an infield single, but Orcutt struck out two batters and popped a third up to close out the series win.
Orcutt was brilliant in relief of a solid showing by Parker. Parker scattered six hits and three earned runs in four innings, with Orcutt pitching the final three innings and surrendering no runs and two hits while striking out four. She earned her second win of the weekend and pitched in all four contests, going 2-1 with a 2.25 ERA in 18.2 inning of work, allowing 16 hits, striking out 13 and not allowing a run in three of the four contests.
McGivney was 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Iannucci was 2-for-3 in the victory.
