Volleyball Drops Heartbreaker To CCSU

QUEENS, N.Y. – After winning the first set of its second match of the day, the Big Red volleyball team dropped three tight sets to Central Connecticut State to conclude its first day of action at the 2015 Jack Kaiser Volleyball Classic at St. John's University. Cornell (2-3) won the first set 25-22, before the Blue Devils stormed back to win the final three, 25-19, 26-24, 25-19. With the win, CCSU improves to 6-1 on the year.

The Big Red saw a pair of players reach double-digit kills, as Emily Wemhoff and Kit McCarty finished with 13 and 12 kills, respectively.  Wemhoff also added 10 digs, as part of an impressive defensive effort that saw four Cornell players register at least 10 digs. Freshman Natalie Danenhauer finished with a team-high 15 digs, while sophomore Chelsea Sincox posted 13. Junior setter Alyssa Phelps also posted a double-double with 37 assists and 12 digs.

The Big Red finished with eight team blocks with freshman Alex Basler tallying six block assists.

Cornell hit just .096 as a team, thanks in large part to CCSU's 21 total team blocks. Maddie Smith registered nine block assists, while MaKenna Lommori and Nicole Dean finished with eight block assists each. Lommori also posted a match-high 18 digs.

Offensively, the Blue Devils were led by Raquel Quirarte's 20 kills.

The Big Red is back in action tomorrow morning when it takes on the host Red Storm at 10 a.m., before closing the tournament against George Mason at 3 p.m.
