BURLINGTON, V t. – The Big Red field hockey team dominated Vermont in a 2-0 victory this morning in the first round of the Catamount Invitational. Freshman
Isabel Siergiej registered the first goals of her collegiate career with a pair of tallies, and the Cornell defense didn't allow Vermont to put a shot on goal.
Cornell (3-2) held the significant advantage in shots, 21-2, and put 10 shots on goal. The Big Red also out-cornered the Catamounts, 8-3.
Siergiej got Cornell on the board in just the 13th minute when she collected a rebound off a blocked shot by
Isabel Josephs and then beat Lena Benwood over her stick to put the visitors up, 1-0.
Cornell had a fantastic chance in the early moments of the second half as
Krysten Mayers had a break away, but Benwood was up to the task and made a brilliant save to keep it a one-goal game. Moments later the Big Red defended a deep run by Vermont and got the ball out quickly in transition with Josephs finding Mayers deep in Catamount territory. Mayers managed to evade a defender and centered the ball to Siergiej, who found the back of the net to give Cornell the 2-0 advantage at the 46:11 mark.
The Big Red kept up the pressure with a great opportunity by Josephs being turned away at the 51:14 mark and also had four penalty corners down the stretch, but couldn't manage to find the back of the net.
Brenwood finished with eight saves for the Catamounts.
Cornell is back in action tomorrow, Sunday, Sept. 20, when it takes on Maine in the second round of the Catamount Invitational at 2:30 p.m.
