(PDF) ONEONTA, N.Y. — Cornell men's soccer took the short trip to Hartwick on Wednesday night, where the Big Red fell, 2-0, to the Hawks. Hartwick tallied a goal in each half.
On the Hawks' first goal in the 24
th minute, freshman goalkeeper
Rhys Moller made the save on the initial shot, but the ball popped out in front of the net and Marc Barry tucked it home.
The Big Red's best chance of the first half came in the form of a free kick about 25 yards out in the 18
th minute that curled just wide of the net.
Freshman
Ryan Watters created several offensive opportunities in the second half, including a quick one-touch shot in the 64
th minute that bounded just outside the left post. Watters and junior
Madison Heck led the team with two shots.
The momentum began to swing in the Big Red's favor midway through the second frame when the Hawks were issued a series of fouls and yellow cards. But Hartwick responded in the 70
th minute with a second goal, again capitalizing on a ball that rebounded back into the box after Moller made the initial stop. Jamie O'Grady's shot slipped through and glanced off the right post and in.
Moller denied the Hawks' try for a third moments later, when a free kick landed right on the foot of Dean Fowler. Fowler looked to bury it but came face-to-face with Moller, who smothered it. Moller made four saves on the night.
With the loss, Cornell fell to 1-6-1, while Hartwick improved to 4-2-2. The Big Red plays the second installment of a three-game road stint at 5 p.m. on Sunday at Buffalo before beginning Ivy League play at Penn the following weekend.
