THE MATCHUP: The Big Red volleyball team opens the 2015 season at the Black Knights Invitational, where it will face William & Mary and Iona on Saturday, Sept. 5 at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. respectively, before taking on the host Black Knights on Sunday, Sept. 6 at 1 p.m. Cornell has a winning record against all three teams, going 2-1 all-time vs. William & Mary and Iona, while posting a mark of 6-1 vs. Army.

SEASON OPENERS: Cornell is 27-14-1 all-time in season openers. Since 1995, the Big Red is an impressive 14-5 in the first match of the season.
THE SERIES VS. WILLIAM & MARY: Cornell holds the 2-1 advantage over the Tribe, but the two programs have not met since the 1993 season, a 3-0 victory for the Big Red in the final match of the William & Mary Tournament.

VS. THE CAA: The Big Red has a 13-22 record all-time against the current members of the CAA. Cornell holds a winning record vs. James Madison (1-0), Towson(3-2), and William & Mary (2-1), but a losing mark vs. Delaware (2-3), Hofstra (1-7), or Northeastern (4-9). The Big Red has never faced Charleston, Elon, or UNC-Williamsburg in women's volleyball.
THE SERIES VS. IONA: Cornell holds a 2-1 edge in the series with Iona, taking the advantage with a 3-1 victory at the 2013 Cornell Invitational. Â Iona won the first ever meeting in 1997, while the Big Red tied the series with a victory in 2003.Â

VS. THE MAAC: The Big Red has dominated the current members of the MAAC, posting a combined record of 36-9 against the conference. Cornell holds winning records vs. Canisius (7-1), Fairfield (3-1), Iona (2-1), Marist (1-0), Niagara (11-1), Rider (4-1) and Siena (6-1). Only one MAAC school – Manhattan (1-0) – holds a winning mark against the Big Red, while the series with Saint Peter's is tied (2-0). Cornell has never faced Quinnipiac in volleyball.

THE SERIES VS. ARMY: The Big Red first played Army during the 1978 season, a 2-0 Cornell victory in the New York State Tournament. Cornell went on to win the first six meetings in the series before the Black Knights earned a 3-0 win during the 2007 season.

VS. THE PATRIOT LEAGUE: The Big Red has had great success against the current members of the Patriot League, posting an 88-41 record overall, thanks in large part to a 54-29 record vs. Colgate. Cornell also has a winning record vs. Army (6-1), Bucknell (13-2), Holy Cross (4-0), Lafayette (4-1), and Lehigh (5-2). The only team with a winning record against the Big Red is American (4-0), while the series with Navy is tied (2-2). Cornell has never played Loyola in volleyball.
THE HEAD COACH:
Trudy Vande Berg is in her first season as The Wendy Schaenen '79 Head Coach Of Volleyball at Cornell (0-0, .000) ... Vande Berg became the 11th head coach in Cornell volleyball history in March 2015 after spending three seasons as the Big Red's top assistant coach ... Prior to her time at Cornell, Vande Berg spent time as an assistant coach at North Florida, Duke, and Iowa State and as a volunteer assistant at Wisconsin. She also served as head coach of the Team Iowa Ice professional club in the Premier Volleyball League, where she guided the team to the championship in her second year at the helm. Ice is the only team to have medaled in each of the three years of the league's existence.

Alyssa Phelps currently sits in 10th place in Cornell history for career assists (1,693), needing 15 more to move past Tere Duran (1987-88) and into ninth place.

UP NEXT: The Big Red will travel to the St. John's Tournament to face San Francisco on Friday, Sept. 11 at 2 p.m., before taking on Central Connecticut at 4:30p.m. The next morning, Cornell will take on the Red Storm at 10 a.m., before closing the tournament against George Mason at 3 p.m. Of the four opponents, Cornell holds a winning record against only CCSU (4-1). The series with George Mason is tied at 2-2, while both San Francisco and St. John's hold the 2-0 advantage.
