HAMILTON, N.Y. --- In a game in which 11 total penalties were taken, special teams proved to be key, with Colgate downing Cornell, 4-3, behind three power play goals Tuesday night at Starr Rink. The Big Red took a 3-1 lead into the first intermission before the Raiders scored three unanswered goals in the second period to snap Cornell's 16-game, seven-year unbeaten streak against Colgate. The loss moves the Big Red to 7-8-2 overall and 3-5-2 in ECAC Hockey play.
Â
The Raiders (12-4-6, 4-2-4 ECAC Hockey) gave the Big Red its first power play opportunity just 38 seconds into the game, which Cornell used to jump out to an early advantage. Junior
Hanna Bunton dropped back to the point and sent a pass into classmate
Kaitlin Doering down low, who one-timed a shot past Julia Vandyk.
Â
Colgate looked to equalize moments later, ringing a shot off the crossbar after a long bout of possession in Cornell's end. A Big Red penalty then sent the Raiders to the power play, and they scored a power play goal of their own to even the score at one. Jessie Eldridge got the puck in the corner and connected with Megan Sullivan in front, who slipped a shot into the low right corner.
Â
The teams traded another pair of penalties before the period was over. Cornell came up empty-handed on its own power play opportunity, but regained the lead on Colgate's man-advantage. Sophomore
Erin O'Connor stole the puck on the right wing and skated it into the zone. Vandyk made the initial save on O'Connor, but Doering put in the rebound for her second of the night and second shorthanded goal in as many games.
Â
Butnon then made it 3-1 with 1:54 left to go in the first frame, taking advantage of a Colgate giveaway low in the Raiders zone. She patiently picked her spot and fired into the top left corner for her team-leading ninth goal of the season.
Â
Colgate mounted its comeback early in the second period with a tic-tac-toe passing play on the power play to pull within one. Kayla Haus then knotted the game at three, poking home a loose puck under a sprawling Voorheis. The officials reviewed the play, but the ruling on the ice of a good goal stood. The Raiders netted their third power play tally of the night just 2:21 later, with Shae Labbe batting in a rebound to give Colgate a lead it wouldn't surrender.
Â
The line of
Christian Higham,
Taylor Woods and
Anna Zorn had a strong shift with about seven minutes left in the middle frame, with all three forwards firing dangerous high shots on Vandyk, but the freshman netminder shut the door.
Â
A fruitless Cornell power play in the late moments of the second shifted into six seconds of 4-on-4 and then a Colgate man-advantage to close the frame.
Â
The Raiders then took another penalty—the ninth total penalty of the game—just 1:51 into the third, but Colgate shut down the Big Red attack.
Â
Cornell returned to the power play with 12:13 to go, but a Big Red penalty just nine seconds into the man-advantage left it 4-on-4 for 1:51. Bunton generated a chance, streaking down the right wing and making a move around both Colgate defensemen, but Vandyk closed her pads on Bunton's low shot.
Â
The Big Red put pressure on late and pulled Voorheis in favor of an extra attacker in an attempt to find a tying goal. Colgate sent the puck towards the open net, and icing was waived off, allowing more time to tick off the clock before the Raiders pinned the puck against the boards in the neutral zone until time expired.
Â
The Big Red won't have to wait long for a chance to bounce back, as the team returns home this weekend for the first time since Nov. 17 to face Yale and Brown. Cornell hosts the Bulldogs at 7 p.m. on Friday and the Bears at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
