Women's Basketball Heads To OT Again, Takes Down Dartmouth

Box Score (PDF)

ITHACA, N.Y. --- For the first time since the 1972-1973 season and the first time ever in Ivy League play, Cornell women's basketball went to overtime for the second time in as many games. After shooting 66.7 percent from the field in the second half, the Big Red came out on the winning side of a back-and-forth battle Saturday night in Newman Arena, downing Dartmouth, 71-58.

Senior Maddie Campbell posted a career-high 18 points and added seven rebounds, while junior Nia Marshall led the Big Red  with 19 points and eight boards. Junior Nicholle Aston rounded out the double figure scorers (10 points) and added seven rebounds and four assists. Junior Megan LeDuc chipped in nine points and  tied a career mark with nine assists, with no turnovers, while playing a full 45 minutes.

Dartmouth (7-13, 2-2 Ivy League) was led by Lakin Roland's 19-point, 16-rebound double-double, while Kate Letkewicz added 12 points.

Cornell (11-7, 3-1 Ivy League) shot an impressive .491 percent from the floor (27-of-55) and connected on .400 percent from beyond the arc (4-of-10), while holding the Big Green to just .375 percent overall, including a mark of .125 (1-of-8) in overtime, and just .200 percent from 3-point range. The Big Red also held the slim edge in rebounds (36-33), but Dartmouth used 12 offensive boards to score 10 second chance points.

Both teams took care of the ball with the Big Green registering just eight turnovers to Cornell's 11.

Cornell completely dominated the overtime period, shooting .500 (3-6) overall and knocking down 9-of-10 free throws, while holding Dartmouth to a 1-of-8 performance from the floor.

The Big Red won the tip in the extra frame, and Aston found Marshall under the basket for a layup. Marshall added another, and the Big Red defense came up with a pair of stops before LeDuc's jumper gave Cornell a 62-58 lead with 1:20 to go. After another fruitless possession for the Big Green, Campbell pulled down an offensive rebound at the other end to keep the ball with Cornell. LeDuc was sent to the line twice, and made 3-of-4 to push Cornell's advantage to 65-58 with 39.8 seconds to go. Campbell and Aston combined to go 6-for-6 from the charity stripe in the closing seconds to earn Cornell the 71-58 victory.

For as good as Cornell finished the game, the opening 10 minutes were something entirely differet.

With Dartmouth also having played an extra frame Friday night, the first quarter got off to a slow start for both teams. The visitors took a 7-2 lead into the first media timeout, but freshman Caroline Shelquist then drained a three to bring the Big Red within two. After the Big Green pushed its lead to 11-6, Aston hit a jumper in the waning seconds of the first quarter to cut into Dartmouth's advantage as the frame expired (11-8).

Aston and Campbell teamed up to pull Cornell back within one early in the second quarter, but Olivia Smith's jumper gave the Big Green a 15-12 advantage. After an Aston layup, LeDuc sent a bounce pass from the baseline to Marshall, who gave the Big Red its first lead of the night (16-15). The teams exchanged one-point leads for the remainder of the quarter, leaving the Big Green up, 24-23, at the half.

Dartmouth pushed its advantage to 30-27 in the third quarter, but another trey from Shelquist and a pair of jumpers from sophomore Christine Ehland gave Cornell a 34-32 lead. The back-and-forth continued throughout the third quarter, and with the Big Red ahead, 40-38, Roland hit a last-second three-pointer to give the Big Green a 41-40 lead heading into the final frame.

Layups from Letkewicz and Emily Slagle, and a pair of free throws from Amber Mixon, gave Dartmouth a 47-42 lead in the fourth, but Marshall answered with back-to-back jumpers to bring the Big Red back within one. LeDuc then found Campbell on the right side and Campbell knocked down just her second 3-pointer of the season to knot the game at 51. Dartmouth scored on the ensuing possession, but Campbell made a layup on the other end, drew a foul, and completed the three-point play and give Cornell a one-point lead.

LeDuc took her own trip to the charity stripe with 3:06 to go, knocking down both and putting the Big Red ahead, 54-51, Cornell's largest lead of regulation. The Big Green responded and Coach Dayna Smith took a timeout with 1:40 to play and a 54-53 lead. Out of the timeout, Marshall made a layup from in tight before Dartmouth called a timeout of its own with 1:15 remaining. Roland then hit a three to even the score at 56. The Big Green defense came up with a stop and got the ball back with 51 seconds to play. Thanks to a Cornell foul that reset the shot clock, Dartmouth was able to run the clock all the way down but Slagle's last-second shot from three didn't fall, sending both teams to overtime for the second straight night.

The Big Red returns to Newman Arena to face Yale at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 5 and Brown at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 6.
