HANOVER, N.H. – The Big Red volleyball team was edged by Dartmouth, 3-2, this evening at Leede Arena in Hanover, N.H. After each team earned a convincing victory in splitting the first two sets, the final three sets were decided by a total of seven points.
Cornell (6-9, 1-6) was led by
Carla Sganderlla's 17-kill, 15-dig double-double, while
Macey Wilson connected on .278 percent of her attempts (8-3-18). Freshman middle
Jenna Phelps was a force at the net, registering a career-high seven block assists to help Cornell to 10 total team blocks. She also added seven kills (7-4-25) and two service aces. Behind Phelps, junior libero
Kiley McPeek tallied a career-high 27 digs.
Senior setter
Alyssa Phelps tallied 32 assists, while sophomore setter
Gabby Goodall saw action in three sets and finished with 13 helpers.
Dartmouth (7-9, 1-5) had three players finish with double-digit kills, led by Kaira Lujan with 14 and a team high .400 hitting percentage (14-2-30). The Big Greens' setters Zoe Leonard and Corinne Cox finished with 31 and 21 assists, respectively, while Danielle Glinka, one of five Dartmouth players to post double-digit digs, finished with a team-high 19.
Cornell got off to a solid start in the match, overcoming a 12-9 deficit in the first set with a 10-1 run that featured six kills and three service aces to take a lead it would not relinquish en route to a 25-20 victory.
The second set was all Dartmouth (25-15), as the home team jumped out to a 9-4 lead and never looked back.
The Big Red fought back from an 18-13 deficit in the third, a set that featured 11 ties and three lead changes, to earn the 26-24 victory. The Cornell comeback began with a kill from Sganderlla, followed by three consecutive Big Red blocks, all of which involved
Jenna Phelps. Another big block from
Jenna Phelps and
Kara Rogers knotted the game at 19-19, and from there the teams essentially traded points before a kill from Sganderlla and yet another block from
Jenna Phelps, this time with her sister
Alyssa Phelps, gave Cornell the win.
In the fourth set, Dartmouth got out to another big lead (19-13). Once again, Cornell clawed its way back into the match, eventually pulling within one point (23-22), but a kill from Sara Lindquist and a Big Red error handed the home team the 25-22 victory.
The roles were reversed in the fifth set, as it was Cornell that jumped out to the early lead, going up, 6-2 behind the strength of four kills from
Samanta Arenas, a kill from Sganderlla and a block from the tandem of Wilson and Rogers. The Big Green called a time out to regroup and then used a 7-2 run to take the 9-8 advantage. Cornell would pull even twice more down the stretch, but three straight Dartmouth kills put the Big Green up for good as the home team won, 15-13.
Cornell is back in action tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 15, when it travels to Harvard to take on the Crimson and 5 p.m.
