WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. –Junior
Katie Carlson scored back-to-back goals to erase a 2-0 Big Red deficit in the 38
th minute of action, but Monmouth registered two late goals to hand Cornell a 4-2 loss at So Sweet A Cat Field in West Long Branch, N.J. Carlson now leads the team in goals (7) and points(16), exceeding her previous season highs already in each statistical category.
Monmouth (9-2) outshot the Big Red, 16-6, and held the slim 4-3 edge on penalty corners. The Hawks put six of its 16 shots on goal, as Cornell goalie
Kelly Johnson posted two saves in the loss. For the home team, goalie Christen Piersanti made just one save to earn the win.
The Hawks jumped out to a quick two-goal advantage in the ninth minute with consecutive goals in a span of 16 seconds. Josephine van der Hoop put the home team on the board first, scoring off a cross from Gab Giardi, before van der Hoop set up Kelly Hanna's goal at the 8:45 mark.
Carlson cut the Hawks' lead in half in the 31st minute when she converted a pass from
Sam McILwrick. She then evened the score at 2-2 in the 38th minute when she and
Krysten Mayers executed a perfect 2-on-1 to beat Piersanti.
Monmouth closed the game with a pair of penalty corner goals from Julie Laszlo accounting for the 4-2 final. On both goals, Alyssa Ercolino provided the assist.
Cornell (5-5) is back in action next weekend when it welcomes Yale and No. 4 Syracuse to Marsha Dodson Field on Saturday, Oct. 8 and Sunday, Oct. 9, respectively. The game vs. the Bulldogs begins at noon, while the contest with the Orange is slated for 3 p.m.
