PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Big Red field hockey team scored six times in a span of less than 10 minutes, including the first career hat trick from junior
Krysten Mayers, to roll to a 6-1 victory over Brown this afternoon in Providence, R.I. With the win, Cornell evened its record at 7-7 overall and improved to 2-3 in the Ivy League.
The Big Red overcame a slow start to finish with the edge in shots (12-8), shots on goal (8-5), and penalty corners (4-2). In her first collegiate start, freshman goalie
Maddie Henry stopped four shots to earn the win, while Brown's Katie Hammaker made just two saves and allowed all six goals in the loss.
In addition to Mayers' three goals, both
Katy Weeks and
Sam McILwrick finished with one goal and one assist apiece.
As lopsided as the victory was, the first 30 minutes were tightly contested with the Bears carrying the play for long stretches of time.
Cornell finally had a great scoring opportunity 12 minutes in when
Elizabeth Horak took a shot from close range that was turned away by Hammaker. Not to be outdone, Henry registered her first career save just four minutes later to continue the stalemate.
Brown had its best chance of the half on a shot by Jaclyn Torres, but Henry made a diving save and moments later
Katy Weeks rewarded her goalie with a penalty corner goal, tipping
Sam McILwrick's shot at the 30:23 mark.
Krysten Mayers made it a 2-0 advantage just before intermission with a spectacular individual effort as she took a pass from
Isabel Josephs, drove past her defender to get to the center of the circle and then roofed a shot over Hammaker.
Mayers started the scoring in the second half when she collected a loose ball at the top of the circle, drove to the right and beat Hammaker to the near post. Less than two minutes later,
Maddy Conklin earned her first collegiate goal when Horak sent a pass from the top of the circle to Conklin on the far post and the freshman banged it home to make it a 4-0 game.
Mayers registered the hat trick, scoring off a pass from
Katie Carlson, to move into a tie with Cari Hills '98 for fifth place all-time in Cornell history with 30 career goals.
Weeks set up Cornell's final goal off a penalty corner, taking the ball from Carlson, faking the shot and then slipping a pass to McILwrick, who blasted the ball to the far post at the 40:14 mark.
Brown (6-7; 2-3 Ivy) spoiled Henry's shutout bid with a penalty corner goal from Katarina Angus with just 41 seconds remaining in the contest.
The Big Red is back in action on Sunday, Oct. 23, when it welcomes Rider to Marsha Dodson Field for its final non-conference game of the season at 1 p.m.
