Yale Outlasts Volleyball, 3-1

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Big Red volleyball team gave Yale all it could handle, but came up short, 3-1 (24-26, 25-16, 21-25, 21-25), this evening at Lee Amphitheater in New Haven, Conn. The Bulldogs, sitting in second place in the Ivy standings, improve to 14-4 overall and 7-2 in the conference.

Cornell (9-10; 3-6 Ivy) finished the match with more kills (56-48), a better hitting percentage (.232 to .194) and more digs (60-50), thanks in large part to a dominate second set by the Big Red.

Carla Sganderlla posted a season-high 20 kills to lead Cornell, while hitting an impressive .311 (20-4-45) on the evening, but was the only Big Red player in double-digits, as Kit McCarty and Emily Wemhoff chipped in nine and eight kills, respectively. Sganderlla also added 10 digs and two service aces to the cause.

Senior middle blocker Macey Wilson finished with seven total blocks (one solo, six assists) to move into third place in Cornell history for career block assists and fifth place overall in total career blocks.

Senior setter Alyssa Phelps finished with 37 assists and eight digs to go along with five kills on just seven attempts with no errors, while junior libero Kiley McPeek posted a match-high 16 digs.

Yale's Brittani Steinberg (14) and Kelley Wirth (12) both finished with double-digit kills, but neither hit particularly well with Steinberg finishing at .098 percent (14-10-41) and Wirth hitting just .171 (12-6-35). Steinberg finished with a 14-kill, 13-dig double-double.

Setter Fanny Arnautou tallied 33 assists and nine digs, while libero Kate Swanson finished with 10 digs.
