Earl Wins First As Wright Lights Up Hometown Return In Win At Lafayette

EASTON, Pa. -- Sophomore Donovan Wright did a pretty good impersonation of his head coach, hitting eight 3-pointers in a return to his hometown to allow make sure Brian Earl left Lafayette's Kirby Sports Center with his first collegiate coaching win. Cornell won its first-ever game in Easton after seven tries with an 82-75 victory over the Leopards on Sunday afternoon to improve to 1-3. Lafayette slipped to 2-2.

Wright, who lived in Easton throughout middle school and high school, went 8-of-10 from 3-point range for a career-high 26 points, more than doubling his career total of 11 points entering the game. The sophomore, who missed his rookie season with a shoulder injury, ended the night with the third-most 3-point field goals made in a game in school history.
 
Few people can understand what it's like to have a night like that shooting the including Earl. The Big Red's first-year head coach graduated as the all-time leader in 3-pointers in Ivy League history (281) and still stands third, but he never hit eight treys in a contest during his Princeton career.
 
Wright was one of five Cornell players who scored in double figures in a high-energy performance on both ends of the floor. The Big Red had 19 assists and just 10 turnovers, made 14 3-pointers and was disruptive in the passing lanes. Fellow sophomore Stone Gettings had 12 points, eight rebounds, a career-high eight assists and two steals and classmate Matt Morgan had 13 points, four rebounds and four assists. Seniors Robert Hatter (12 points, three rebounds, three assists) and JoJo Fallas (11 points) each ended the night in double figures as well. Cornell shot 52 percent overall and didn't trail after an early 5-3 deficit 70 seconds into the game. The Big Red led by as many as 20 and by low double figures most of the contest.
 
Lafayette shot 48 percent overall and 56 percent (9-of-16) from beyond the arc with Matt Klinewski (23 points) and Nick Lindner (19 points) combining for 42 of the Leopards' 75 points. Eric Stafford added 10 points, six assists and four rebounds in the loss.

Key Stretch
• Trailing 9-8 three and a half minutes into the game, Cornell went on a 26-5 run on the strength of seven different scorers.
• Inside the run was a 15-0 stretch over 5:54 that caused the home team to take two timeouts.
• Wright had eight points during the run, including two of his eight 3-pointers. 
• The Big Red led by 20 (34-14) when the run was over, and Lafayette never got closer then the final margin of seven points the rest of the way.
 
Notes to Know
• Earl's first career coaching victory came against the Patriot League's all-time wins leader, Fran O'Hanlon (297 wins) of Lafayette.
• Entering the game, Cornell had hit just 14 total 3-pointers on 23 percent shooting.
• Sophomore Donovan Wright was 0-for-2 from 3-point range in his career entering the game.
Stone Gettings, Robert Hatter and Matt Morgan have been in double figures in each of the team's four contests.
• Gettings had a career high eight assists and was two rebounds and two assists shy of the first-ever triple-double in Cornell history.
• Morgan posted his 21st consecutive game in double figures.
• The Big Red hit 14 3-pointers to mark its 776th straight game with at least one made shot from beyond the arc dating back to 1988.
• Cornell had been 0-7 all-time against Lafayette in Easton prior to Sunday's win.
• The Big Red's 14 3-pointers sits ninth on the school's single-game list.
