ITHACA, N.Y. – The Big Red volleyball team swept an Ivy League opponent for the first time in just over two years (Penn on Oct. 31, 2014), defeating Dartmouth, 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-17), on Senior Night in Newman Arena. With the win, Cornell improves to 11-11 overall (5-7 Ivy), giving the Big Red its most wins in a season since the 2006 team went 18-9.
As a team, Cornell posted a .324 hitting percentage (45-12-102) with four players –
Alyssa Phelps,
Macey Wilson,
Jenna Phelps and
Kit McCarty – hitting better than .350 as the quartet combined for 25 kills and just two errors on 51 attempts.
In their final game at Newman Arena,
Alyssa Phelps assisted on 31 of Cornell's 45 kills, registered six digs, and finished with five kills and no errors on five attempts, while Wilson had six kills and no errors on 16 attempts.
Sophomore
Carla Sganderlla finished with a match-high 12 kills, hitting .214 (12-6-28), and added 10 digs for her fourth consecutive double-double and her 11th on the season. McCarty and
Emily Wemhoff also chipped in eight kills apiece.
Libero
Kiley McPeek finished with a match-high 16 digs.
Dartmouth (8-15, 1-11) struggled offensively, hitting just .142 as a team without a single player reaching double-digit kills. Middle hitter Abby Kott was a bright spot for the Big Green, finishing with a team-high seven kills and posting a blistering .583 hitting percentage (7-0-12).
In both the first and third set, the result was never in doubt, with Cornell jumping out to large leads early and then holding off late Dartmouth runs to take the victories. The second set, however, got off to a slow start for the Big Red. The Big Green used strong serving and timely hitting to take an 8-3 lead on a kill form Kaira Lujan, but a big block from
Jenna Phelps and Sganderlla started the comeback for the home team. Cornell tattled off 11 of the next 12 points to take a commanding 14-10 lead that it would not relinquish.
The Big Red will play its final games of the season when it travels to Princeton and Penn on Friday, Nov. 11 and Saturday, Nov. 12, respectively.
