LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- The Cornell men's basketball team connected on 16 3-pointers, but an early 14-point lead for Troy proved too much to overcome as the Trojans topped the Big Red 92-84 on Thursday afternoon at Orleans Arena. Troy (7-6) will play Chicago State in the lower bracket of the Continental Tire Las Vegas Invitational, while the Big Red (2-8) will meet Southeast Missouri State.
The Big Red hit 16-of-38 3-pointers, marks that rank third and second in terms of makes and attempts in school history. For the second time in four games, sophomore
Matt Morgan connected on seven treys, while classmate
Stone Gettings made 5-of-7 on the night.
JoJo Fallas hit a pair and both
Darryl Smith and
Robert Hatter made one.
Morgan had a game-high 27 points on 7-of-15 shooting from beyond the arc, while Gettings had 22 points, three rebounds, three assists and two blocks. Senior
Robert Hatter was credited with 15 points, seven rebounds and six assists in the loss.
Darryl Smith had seven points, four rebounds and two assists as the Big Red had 18 assists to 14 turnovers on the night - the third time in its last four games it has posted a positive assist:turnover ratio.
Troy had six double figure scorers, led by 19 points from Wesley Person. Kevin Baker (15), DeVon Walker (14 points, five rebounds, four assists), Jeremy Hollimon (12 points), Alex Hicks (11 points, six rebounds) and Jordon Varnado (10 points, eight rebounds) also reached double digits. The Trojans turned the ball over just eight times as a team and held a 40-36 edge on the backboards. Troy also nearly tripled up the Big Red scoring from the line (26-10).
KEY STRETCH
• Right from the tip, Troy was the aggressor and jumped out to a 14-point (17-3) just 5:27 in the game.
• DeVon Walker set the tone with the game's first two baskets and assisting on a bucket that triggered a 13-0 Trojans run.
• Cornell briefly took a second half lead after clawing back from as many as 13 down after the break, but Troy got the better of play in the final 10 minutes to collect the win.

• Cornell's 16 3-pointers ranks tied for third on the school's single-game list (record is 20) and its 38 attempts sits second in a game (record is 41).

Matt Morgan hit seven 3-pointer for the second time in four games and is now one of four Big Red players with at least two career games with at least seven 3-point field goal makes.
• Morgan hit the 100th 3-pointer of his career, joining 19 other Cornellians, and ended the day with 104 makes.

Stone Gettings is averaging 22.3 points after never previously scoring more than 16 points in a college game.
• With his 15 points,
Robert Hatter moved to 22nd on the school's career scoring list (1,020 points). Next up is Jeff Gaca '93 with 1,059.
• Over the last four games, the Big Red has 69 assists and just 54 turnovers.
• It has also hit 47 3-pointers over that span (11.8 per game) on 41 percent shooting.

• Cornell will face Southeast Missouri State on Friday, Dec. 23 at 12 p.m. PT in the consolation game of the Continental Tire Las Vegas Invitational's upper bracket.
