LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Cornell placed four players in double figures and limited Southeast Missouri State to 31 percent shooting in claiming a 78-62 victory on Friday afternoon at the Orleans Arena. The Big Red improved to 3-8, while the Redhawks fell to 4-10 to close out the Continental Tire Las Vegas Invitational.
Sophomore
Matt Morgan scored 21 points and added five rebounds, four assists, a blocked shot and a steal en route to all-tournament honors. He connected on five 3-pointers on the afternoon, giving him 18 in the Big Red's four tournament games. In all, he averaged 19.8 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.1 assists during the tournament.
Sophomore
Stone Gettings had 16 points, eight rebounds and four assists in the win, while senior
Robert Hatter (13 points, 11 rebounds, three assists) recorded his third career double-double with a career rebounding high. Sophomore
Troy Whiteside hit all five of his field goals for 11 points as the Big Red shot 52 percent from the floor as a team and held a 41-29 edge on the glass.
The Redhawks shot just 18-of-58 on the night and hit on just 7-of-30 shots after halftime (23 percent) in the loss. Jaylen Benton led the way with 16 points, while Tahj Eaddy (13), Antonius Cleveland (12) and Milos Vranes (10) also reached double figures.
Cornell exploded out of the gates and didn't need to claw back from an early deficit, leading the entire way through the first 20 minutes and by as many as 13 point (19-6). Morgan scored 13 of his points in the game's first nine minutes, including connecting on three 3-pointers. As a team, Cornell was 6-of-12 from beyond the arc in the first half and hit on 58 percent of its shots overall. Just as importantly, the Big Red held an 18-11 edge on the backboards with Hatter grabbing seven by himself.
The Redhawks were able to climb back into the game, getting within four (37-33) before Hatter exploded through the lane and hit a soft runner at the halftime horn to make it 39-33.
The second half was more of the same, as Cornell turned a six-point edge into a 17-point lead 7:19 into the half as part of a 14-1 run behind six points from Hatter. The Big Red upped the lead to 18 and only briefly saw its advantage dip below double figures in claiming its third win of the season.
