Women's Basketball Falls To Ivy League-Leading Penn

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. --- Cornell women's basketball suffered its second loss of the weekend as Ivy League-leading Penn topped the Big Red, 65-50, at the Palestra on Saturday night.

Junior Megan LeDuc posted a career-high nine rebounds for Cornell (13-9, 5-3 Ivy League) while classmate Nia Marshall finished with 17 points and junior Nicholle Aston posted 12.

Penn's Sydney Stipanovich finished with a double-double, posting 21 points and 12 rebounds. Anna Ross added 15 points and Michelle Nwokedi chipped in 12.

The Quakers (18-3, 7-0) took a 7-0 lead after Sydney Stipanovich made a pair of free throws. Junior Kerri Moran knocked down a three-pointer to get the Big Red on the board and then hit another on Cornell's next possession to cut Penn's lead to three. When the Quakers had pushed their advantage back to eight behind a pair of jumpers from Stipanovich and a three from Anna Ross, sophomore Christine Ehland's layup once again made it a two-possession game. Stipanovich and Ross teamed up for five more points before Marshall made a free throw to leave Penn's advantage at 21-11 at the end of the first quarter.

Aston grabbed an offensive rebound and a steal to open the second quarter, and Marshall drained a jumper from the left side.

Midway through the quarter, with the Quakers ahead, 30-17, Aston made a layup and drew a foul, and Marshall hit another jumper. Beth Brzozowski then put up five points and Stipnaovich made two free throws to give Penn a 16-point advantage. Marshall added four more points before the close of the half, but the Quakers took a 43-27 lead into the locker room.

Penn's first four points of the third quarter came from the charity stripe, with the Big Red not giving up a field goal until 4:37. LeDuc got the Big Red within 13 early in the period, and Ehland and Marshall both went 2-for-2 from the line in the third, but the Quakers pushed their lead back to 20, bringing a 57-37 advantage into the final frame.

LeDuc opened the scoring in the fourth quarter, driving to the basket for a layup, and sophomore Marisa Knox sunk a pair of free throws. Aston's jumper then cut Penn's lead back to 16, but a pair of jumpers from Stipanovich gave the Quakers a 63-43 advantage.

LeDuc knocked down a three from the left side with 2:20 to go, and a layup from Marshall left the final at 65-50.

The Big Red makes the second leg of its four-game road trip next weekend, heading to Dartmouth and Harvard on Friday and Saturday, respectively. Tip-off against the Big Green is set for 7 p.m. before the Big Red takes on the Crimson at 6 p.m Saturday.
