Defense Propels Women’s Hockey In Shutout Of Dartmouth

Box Score (PDF)

ITHACA, N.Y. ---  Junior Kaitlin Doering's shorthanded goal proved to be the difference-maker as Cornell women's hockey topped Dartmouth, 1-0, with junior goaltender  Paula Voorheis posting a 28-save shutout  Friday night at Lynah Rink.

With the win and Yale's tie with St. Lawrence, the Big Red moves into a tie with Yale for the final ECAC Hockey playoff spot heading into the final game of the regular season.

The first period was a flurry of chances both ways, with Dartmouth holding a narrow 14-12 edge in shots at the close of the frame. Senior Taylor Woods had one of the Big Red's first opportunities, coming in close and trying to tuck a shot under Big Green goaltender Robyn Chemago. Just moments later, senior Anna Zorn sent a blast just wide.

With about 13:27 to go in the first, senior Jess Brown sent a pass from the corner to junior Hanna Bunton in front of the net, and Bunton's one-timer was stopped by Chemago.

Doering broke through for the Big Red at 11:22 with Cornell down a player. Bunton got the puck along the left board and Doering bolted up ice, receiving the pass at the Dartmouth blue line and skating in to beat Chemago. The goal was Doering's third shorthanded tally of the year, tying her for first in Cornell history for shorthanded goals in a season.

The Big Green was not without its own scoring chances in the opening stanza, with Catherine Berghuis ringing one of the post with about nine minutes left and Laura Stacey sending in a rocket that Voorheis snatched up in her glove as a Dartmouth power play expired.

The Big Red's special teams went to work again in the second period, killing off a five-minute major penalty. The Cornell penalty killers hardly allowed the Dartmouth power play to get set up and allowed just three shots on the extended man-down situation.

Bunton nearly doubled the Big Red's lead moments later. Her shot from the left circle beat Chemago on the far side, but pinged off the post and out.

Bunton had another opportunity early in the third, aiming for Chemago's glove side. Chemago tried to glove it down, but bobbled in and dropped the rebound back in front of the net.

Cornell played shut-down defense in the third, allowing just five shots on goal from the Big Green while registering 14 of its own at the other end. The Big Red defense blocked 20 shots on the night, with senior Cassandra Poudrier leading the way with five blocks and freshman Micah Hart and sophomore Erin O'Connor both posting four.

On a power play midway through the final frame, freshman Lenka Serdar got the puck in the slot and spun around a Dartmouth defenseman to get a shot off that nearly beat Chemago.

Voorheis made another spectacular save, this time on Emma Korbs with about nine minutes remaining, once again flashing her glove to preserve the shutout, her second of the season and seventh of her career, which ties her for fifth for most career shutouts in Cornell history.

The Big Red plays its final game of the regular season Saturday against rival Harvard. Puck drop is set for 4 p.m. and a playoff berth will be on the line for Cornell. The Big Red's six seniors will be honored in a postgame ceremony.
