Women's Hockey Makes Playoffs With OT Win Over Harvard

Box Score (PDF)

ITHACA, N.Y. ---  Senior Jess Brown sure knows how to make an exit. In her final game at Lynah Rink, Brown once again came through in the clutch for Cornell women's hockey, scoring the game-winner 47 seconds into overtime to lift the Big Red to a 3-2 victory over rival Harvard on Saturday afternoon. With the win, and Yale and Rensselaer losses on Saturday, Cornell clinches the seventh seed in the ECAC Hockey playoffs and will face No. 2 seed Clarkson.

With Cornell holding a 2-1 lead late into the game, the Crimson pulled even with 26.5 seconds left, taking advantage of an extra attacker with the goalie pulled. Harvard worked the puck around the zone and Miye D'Oench found Sydney Daniels in front to send the game to overtime.

Cornell (13-12-4, 9-9-4 ECAC Hockey) grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first period, capitalizing on its first and only power play of the game. Freshman Micah Hart started the play in the defensive zone, sending a pass up the left wing to senior Cassandra Poudrier. Freshman Lenka Serdar flicked the puck back to Poudrier at the Harvard blue line. Poudrier gained the Harvard zone and found Woods in front, and Woods beat Harvard goaltender Emerance Maschmeyer on the blocker side.

Junior Brianna Veerman doubled the Big Red's lead with her sixth goal of the season, taking advantage of a Harvard miscue in the high slot and slipping a low shot past Maschmeyer at 11:20 of the first.

Junior goaltender Paula Voorheis had another strong performance in net, stopping a quality chance from Grace Zarzecki, who came in close and tried to tuck a shot beneath Voorheis' pads. Voorheis made 23 saves in the victory.

Harvard (16-10-3, 12-7-3 ECAC Hockey) pulled one back in the second period, when D'Oench broke free. D'Oench streaked into the zone and slid the puck across to Daniels, who buried it.

The Big Red killed a crucial penalty moments after Harvard had gotten on the board. The Cornell penalty kill was perfect on the weekend, holding the Crimson to just one shot on three power play opportunities.

In the third period, Brown had a number of quality chances, including a shot that Maschmeyer couldn't hold on to that skidded loose through the crease. About midway through the frame, Brown took a shot and then gloved down a Harvard defenseman's clearing attempt to give herself another try on goal.

With the Big Red's postseason hopes hanging in the balance in overtime, Hart got the puck at the point and dumped it behind the net. Bunton picked it up in the corner and sent a backhand pass to Brown in the slot, who put a high shot past Maschmeyer to lift Cornell to victory. The Big Red is now 5-0-2 when Brown scores.

With the win, the Big Red will head to Clarkson next weekend for a best-of-three quarterfinal series.
