Box Score (PDF)

POTSDAM, N.Y. --- Despite taking an early two-goal lead, Cornell fell to No. 5/5 Clarkson in Game 2 of the ECAC Hockey Quarterfinals, 5-2, Saturday afternoon in Cheel Arena. The result gives the Golden Knights the series win, eliminating the Big Red from the ECAC Hockey Tournament.

Junior goaltender Paula Voorheis was valiant for Cornell, making a career-high 47 saves. Cornell scored twice in the first period, but Clarkson pulled one back in the final moments in the opening frame. The Golden Knights tied the game in the second, before scoring three times in the final 5:48 of the game, including an empty-net goal to seal the victory.

The Big Red earned a power play just 1:38 into the game when senior Cassandra Poudrier was held up behind the Clarkson net. Classmate Taylor Woods had a quality chance with the man-advantage, sending in a rising backhand shot as freshman Lenka Serdar screened Clarkson goaltender Shea Tiley.

As the penalty expired, the Golden Knights created a two-on-one into the Cornell zone, and held the puck there. Rhyen McGill put a dangerous redirect on net, but junior goaltender Paula Voorheis made the pad stop.

Cornell drew another penalty behind the Clarkson net about six minutes in, but once again came up emptyhanded, but got another opportunity just moments later when senior Anna Zorn was tripped up at the Cornell blue line. Senior Jess Brown capitalized, getting the puck along the right boards, skating through the circle and beating Tiley to give Cornell a 1-0 lead with 9:51 to go in the first period.

With about eight minutes remaining in the first, Erin Ambrose sent in a shot from the point that Cayley Mercer got a stick on, directing it on net, but Voorheis was there to shut the door.

The Big Red doubled its lead with 6:54 to go in the first, picking up on a mistake by the Clarkson defenseman. Junior Kaitlin Doering picked up the puck along the post and fed freshman Christian Higham in the slot. Higham then put away her shot over Tiley's right shoulder.

The Golden Knights line of Brielle Bellerive, Kelly Mariani and Katelyn Fournier responded by pepperiong Voorheis with a flurry of shots from in close, but Voorheis gave no ground, making an impressive series of stops to hold Clarkson off the board. With about 2:20 left, Voorheis made a highlight reel save on Savannah Harmon, sprawling to use her glove to stop the puck on the goal line after it had squirted loose.

Cayley Mercer broke through for the Knights with 1:32 to go in the first, sending a blast from the left circle into the top corner.

With the teams skating four-on-four in the early goings of the middle frame, Bunton found space and skated up the right wing, with her shot going just wide of the open right side of the net. With the puck coming around the other side of the net, sophomore Erin O'Connor hammered a shot in on Tiley, but Tiley covered up.

Clarkson evened the score on a power play, when Olivia Howe picked up a puck in the crease that had gotten behind Voorheis. The Knights nearly took the lead just a moment later, but Voorheis and a sprawling Serdar teamed up to stop the puck at the goal line. Then, shortly after that, a Clarkson shot rang off the crossbar.

Brown got a chance with about two minutes left of the second, toe-dragging around her defender and sending in a shot that Tiley hung onto.

Clarkson came in on a three-on-one about eight minutes into the final period, but senior Taylor Woods dove to cut off the pass and prevent the Knights from getting a good shot off.

The Golden Knights took the lead with 5:48 to go, with Voorheis making the initial stop and Kelly Mariani burying the rebound.

With about four minutes left, Bunton had a chance on Tiley, who was crashed into by several players from both teams, nearly pushing her and the puck into the net.

Clarkson then doubled its lead with 2:51 to go, with Rhyen McGill spinning around and putting away a low backhand shot. The Big Red then pulled Voorhies, and Renata Fast put a shot into the empty net with 1:23 remaining.
