Softball Drops First Two At Cherry Blossom Classic

FAIRFAX, Va. -- Cornell's home away from home, the GMU Softball Field, wasn't kind on Friday as the Big Red dropped a pair of contests to begin the Mason Cherry Blossom Classic. Saint Francis (Pa.) rallied for a 5-4 game in the opener before George Mason used a big first inning to pull out a 7-2 triumph in game two. Cornell fell to 0-10 on the year with the two losses.

The Big Red surrendered three runs in the final two innings, including a walk-off home run in the seventh, as the Red Flash won their fourth straight contest over Cornell in the span of a week. Emily Weinberg was 2-for-3 with a walk, a triple and two RBI, while Leanne Iannucci was also 2-for-3 and both Madeline Avery and Megan Murray drove in runs. Cornell led 4-1 heading into the bottom of the third, but the Red Flash scored single runs in the third and sixth to get back within 4-3, then used a Madison Cabell two-run shot with one out in the seventh to claim the win.

George Mason used a four-run first and never looked back in game two, ultimately pulling away for a five-run win. Cornell pounded out 11 hits, including a two-run shot by Taylor Goodin in the second to get back within 4-2. Murray, Iannucci, Goodin, Olivia May and Rebecca Kubena each had two hits in the contest, but the Patriots had 14 of their own.

Cornell will be back in action on Saturday, March 19, when it meets Georgetown at 10 a.m. and the Red Flash at 2:30 p.m.
