Box Score 2 CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Playing against teams that had nearly two dozen games under their belts between them made for a tough season-opening day, as the Cornell softball team dropped an 8-0 contest to Western Michigan in the opener before dropping a 13-7 slugfest in the nightcap to IPFW. The games, the first under longtime associate head coach
Julie Farlow, kicked off a five-game schedule at the South Florida Under Armour Invitational. The Broncos improved to 4-6, while the Mastodons moved to 3-11.
Megan Murray slammed a pair of doubles and drove in four runs in the nightcap, with
Meg Parker also picking up two hits in the loss. A seven-run second inning sank Cornell. The Big Red tried to rally with four in the third and three in the fourth, but it wasn't enough to rebound against the Mastodons.
The Big Red got two-hit in its opener, as sophomore
Rebecca Kubena and freshman
Madeline Avery each had a hit in the third, with Avery picking up her first collegiate single. The Broncos used a six-run second inning off starter
Maddie Orcutt to put the game on ice, scoring two more in the sixth to end the contest. Jordan Kurth did her part in the circle for WMU, scattering the two hits and two walks while striking out six in picking up the complete game triumph.
Cornell will be right to competition when it meets Seton Hall at 10 a.m. and Central Michigan at 12:15 p.m. on Saturday, March 5.
