ITHACA, N.Y. — In its penultimate match before the start of Ivy League play, the men's tennis will host Binghamton at 2 p.m. Sunday at Reis Tennis Center.
Cornell has vaulted up 12 spots to No. 53 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's national rankings this week after defeating the Big Ten's Indiana and Nebraska last week. The Big Red then closed out a stretch of three matches in four days with a Sunday loss at 36th-ranked Drake. Freshman
Karlo Lozic won all three of his singles matches from the No. 6 singles position, the first of which clinched the Big Red's 4-3 victory over the Hoosiers. Junior
Chris Vrabel leads the team with six singles victories, which have all come in his last eight appearances. Freshman
David Volfson has moved into the national singles rankings, tabbed 107th this week by the ITA. Volfson and junior
Colin Sinclair have also combined to win seven of 11 doubles matches.
Binghamton is 7-4 so far in preparation for its second season as an affiliate member of the Mid-American Conference, where conference play starts next week. The Bearcats are on a three-matches winning streak, including 6-1 road wins at Duquesne and St. Bonaventure, plus a 7-0 sweep of Niagara on Feb. 28 at Binghamton Tennis Center. The Bearcats are 17-5 from the top two singles positions, which are primarily buoyed by seniors Sid Hazarika and Eliott Hureau. Junior Thomas Caputo has won in both singles and doubles in each of Binghamton's last three matches.
Cornell is 24-3 all-time against Binghamton, including 7-0 victories in the previous two meetings in 2013 and last year. The Bearcats' last victory over the Big Red came at the start of the 2010 dual season. Sunday's match is free and open to the public.
