Matt Morgan Named To All-Ivy Men's Basketball Second Team

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Six-time Ivy League Rookie of the Week Matt Morgan has been named to the All-Ivy League second team it was announced today after a vote by the conference's eight head coaches. He becomes the first Big Red freshman to capture a spot on an All-Ivy first or second team since Ryan Wittman '10 earned second team honors in 2007.

Morgan averaged 18.9 points, 3.1 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.4 steals per game while starting 26 of the 27 games in which he played. He shot 41 percent from the floor, 33 percent with 70 made 3-pointers and 981 percent from the free-throw line while playing 30.7 minutes per contest. Besides his six Rookie of the Week citations in the Ancient Eight, he was also named Ivy League Player of the Week and the United States Basketball Writers Association's (USBWA) Integris Wayman Tisdale National Freshman of the Week after averaging 32.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 1.5 steals and 1.0 blocks in road wins at Harvard and Dartmouth. Included was a school freshman-record 33-point game in a victory at defending Ivy champ Harvard.

Morgan had a record-setting rookie year for the Big Red, setting numerous Cornell and Ivy League freshman scoring records. The 6-3 guard led the Ancient Eight in scoring overall and in conference games (22.3 ppg.), the latter being the highest scoring average in Ivy contests since 1993. Morgan became the first Ivy rookie to reach the 500-point mark in a season and ended the year with 510 points, the sixth-most in a season in Cornell history. He ranked among the school's single-season leaders in 3-pointers made (11th, 70) and free-throws made (10th, 122), while his steals (33) and free-throw percentage (.808) are just outside the top 20.

The rookie posted 24 double figure scoring games, including 12 of at least 20 points and a pair of 30-point contests. He scored 25 or more points in half of the Big Red's 14 conference games and ranks 53rd nationally in scoring average, including fifth among the nation's freshmen.

Cornell finished the 2015-16 season with a 10-18 record (3-11 Ivy) and expect to return all five starters and the team's top 10 scorers from this past season.
