#55 Men's Tennis Beats #46 Princeton, Makes Case For NCAAs

PRINCETON, N.J. — Bernardo Casares Rosa rallied for a win at #4 singles to punctuate the men's tennis team's 4-3 victory at Princeton on Sunday and keep alive the Big Red's hopes of an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament.

Competing at Lenz Tennis Center, Cornell (12-10, 5-2 Ivy) fell behind early when Princeton (15-9, 3-3) locked up the doubles point. The teams split the first two singles matches to reach completion, with junior Colin Sinclair cruising to a 6-1, 6-2 win from the #2 position. Freshman David Volfson surged to a three-set win at #1, but the Big Red trailed 3-2 with two matches still on the courts.

Senior Stefan Vinti won at #3 to leave the balance of the match on Casares Rosa. He trailed 4-1 in the third set before rattling off wins in final five games to clinch the match for the Big Red.

With the victory, the Big Red posted its highest league win total since it won the Ivy title with a perfect 7-0 mark in 2011. It also marked Cornell's seventh victory in its last 11 meetings with Princeton and avenged a loss to the Tigers in the ECAC Indoor Championships in February.

Cornell, which entered the weekend ranked 55th in the country by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, will now wait to see if it has done enough to warrant an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament. The Big Red is due to move up in the rankings after defeating Penn and the 46th-ranked Tigers, but it won't know if it's done enough until the field of 64 is announced at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 3.
