ITHACA, N.Y. – Princeton wrapped up the 2016 Ivy League South Division crown with a doubleheader sweep of Cornell on Friday afternoon at Niemand*Robison Field on Senior Day. Cornell honored its four seniors –
Taylor Goodin,
Leanne Iannucci,
Meg Parker and
Emily Weinberg – prior to the first pitch of game one. The Tigers improved to 19-25 (12-6 Ivy) and the Big Red slipped to 9-30 (3-15 Ivy).
Game One
Senior
Taylor Goodin's fifth-inning home run ended a Princeton shutout bid in game one, but the Tigers used a five-run seventh inning to cruise to a 10-1 triumph in the opener.
Cornell scratched out just four hits on the afternoon, with
Leanne Iannucci hitting a double and both
Emily Weinberg and
Tori Togashi adding singles for the Big Red.
The Tigers offense was the story, pounding out 14 hits and taking advantage of a strong start in the circle by Shanna Christian. The senior scattered three hits and a walk over six innings of work, striking out four to improve to 4-9 on the season.
Princeton's Skye Jerpbak was a perfect 4-for-4 and was a double away from hitting for the cycle, pounding out a triple and two home runs. She also drove in five runs. Kaylee Grant was 3-for-4 with a homer as well.
Game Two
A two-run home run in the fourth by
Tori Togashi gave Cornell a chance, but Ashley LaGuardia and Riley Wilkinson took home the win in a pitcher's duel with a 4-2 victory.
Maddie Orcutt took the hard-luck loss in game two, tossing a complete game and scattering five hits while allowing just three earned runs.
Emily Weinberg had one of Cornell's four hits and walked twice to lead the offense, while Iannucci capped her home career with a sixth-inning double.
Princeton only had five hits of their own, but also took advantage of five Big Red walks, two errors, a wild pitch and two hit batters.
The Tiger duo of LaGuardia and Wilkinson surrendered just four hits, but also struggled with control with six walks. The Big Red couldn't get the timely hits, however, stranding seven runners on the night.
