ITHACA, N.Y. — The last time the women's soccer team hosted Penn at Berman Field in 2014, the Big Red scored three goals in the first half before holding on for a victory. But on Friday night it was the Quakers who jumped out to a quick three-goal lead, then Penn kept its foot on the accelerator to come away with a 5-0 victory.
Penn (5-2-1, 1-1 Ivy) scored three times in the opening 23 minutes to take a commanding lead, then tacked on a back-breaker just 17.3 seconds before halftime. Cornell (3-6-1, 0-2 Ivy) had three shots on target.
Olivia Blaber opened the scoring in the eighth minute on a third opportunity off Sasha Stephens' corner kick from the left side. Allie Trzaska then doubled the lead in the 20th minute after Emma Loving's long cross from the right side took a slight deflection off the crossbar. That allowed the ball to stay in play, with Stephens crossing the ball back into the box for Trzaska's conversion.
Less than three minutes later, Loving scored her fourth goal of the season off a flick-on header from Sands' shot off a short corner from the left side.
Cornell outshot Penn in the second half, 7-6. The Big Red is next in action at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8 at Harvard before concluding non-league play at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 10 at Colgate.
