Mayers Quick Strike, Big Day Lifts Field Hockey Over Lehigh

ITHACA, N.Y. – Junior Krysten Mayers scored just 28 seconds into the contest vs. Lehigh and had a hand in three of the Big Red's four goals on the day, as Cornell downed the Mountain Hawks, 4-0, at the Ulrich Sports Complex in Bethlehem, Pa.
 
Mayers finished the day with two goals and one assist, moving into ninth place in Big Red history in both career goals (26) and career points (58).  Sophomores Kate Fitzpatrick and Katie Carlson also scored for Cornell with Isabel Josephs adding an assist.
 
In goal, sophomore Kelly Johnson made two saves in 56 minutes of action to earn her 17th career win and will enter next weekend needing just one victory to tie Alex Botte '11, Kaitlin Tierney '03, and Yanaka Bernal '90 for the school record in career victories.
 
Freshman Maddie Henry also saw her first collegiate action, playing the final 14 minutes of the game without facing a shot.
 
Cornell (2-0) outshot the Mountain Hawks, 14-3, and had a 4-1 edge in penalty corners. Lehigh goalie Julia Ward made four saves in the loss.
 
The Big Red is on the road next weekend as it travels to Piscataway, N.J. Cornell will face Ohio University in a neutral site game held at Rutgers on Friday, Sept. 9 at 5 p.m. before facing the Scarlet Knights on Sunday, Sept. 11 at noon.
