Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Women's Hockey Blows By Syracuse, 7-2

Box Score (PDF)

ITHACA, N.Y. – The women's hockey team had seven different goal scorers and freshman Valérie Audet had a game-high four points on four assists to help lift Cornell to a 7-2 win over regional rival Syracuse on Tuesday night at Lynah Rink. It was the first time that the Big Red had at least seven different players score a goal in a game since a 9-2 win over Syracuse on Nov. 1, 2011. In all, Cornell had 13 different players register a point, including senior goaltender Paula Voorheis.

The win, which also secured the 10th consecutive double-digit win season for the program, moved Cornell to 10-5-1 (6-2-1 ECAC Hockey) and dropped Syracuse to 5-10-5 (4-2-2 CHA).

Sophomore Diana Buckley opened the scoring just 4:40 into the game when she stole the puck from an Orange defenseman at the blueline and then broke in on goaltender Maddi Welch for a forehand finish.

Exactly 12 minutes later, Jaime Bourbonnais tipped home a shot from Audet to make it 2-0. Voorheis recorded an assist on the play, which was the first point of her career and the first point from a Cornell goaltender since Lauren Slebodnick '15 assisted on a goal in the final game of the 2014-15 season.

"One of the things the last two games, that has been sort of the secret to our scoring, is we're getting balanced scoring," said head coach Doug Derraugh. "We're getting it from a lot of different lines and a lot of different people are getting involved offensively."

Syracuse pulled a goal back on the power-play with just 44 seconds left in the first period - ending the Big Red's 19-straight penalty kills – but it was Cornell that would strike next midway through the middle frame when senior co-captain Kaitlin Doering tapped home a long look from classmate Brianna Veerman at the right post.

Though the Orange again pulled a goal back with 4:48 to play in the period, it was Cornell's turn to score as time wound down as freshman Paige Lewis potted her second goal in as many games when she beat the Syracuse defense to a rebound at the bottom of the right circle and lifted it past Welch.

Despite heading into the final period with a 4-2 lead, the Big Red did not let up and capitalized on a two-man advantage 4:50 into the period. Sophomore Lenka Serdar got the puck from freshman Kristin O'Neill at the top of the right circle and then sent a feed to classmate Pippy Gerace at the bottom of the left circle for a clean finish and a 5-2 lead.

Veerman notched a goal of her own with under 10 minutes to play when her shot from the left point took Welch by surprise and squeaked through her legs while freshman Grace Graham scored the third goal of her career with 4:57 left on the clock when she dug out a rebound in front of the net and worked it into the net.

Voorheis (5-4-0) aggressively cut off several dangerous looks from the Orange – including a three-save sequence in the second while it was a one-goal game – and finished with 22 saves while Welch (1-2-0) made 12 and Ady Cohen made three in relief.

From here on out, it's conference play for Cornell, beginning with Princeton on Friday night and Quinnipiac on Saturday afternoon.
