Mayers Becomes Cornell's All-Time Points Leader, Scores OT Winner

ITHACA, N.Y. – It was a familiar sight to those that have followed Cornell field hockey over the past four years. Big Red senior forward Krysten Mayers stole the ball from a Brown defender, pulled Bears' goalie Katie Hammaker off her line, and then slipped the ball to the far post for the score. And while it was a familiar move to anyone who has seen Mayers play over the years, the goal was anything but ordinary. Not only did it lift Cornell to the 2-1 victory in overtime against Brown, but it gave Mayers the outright Cornell record for both goals (41) and points (96) in a career.

Cornell (8-5, 2-3 Ivy League) dominated the game, outshooting the visitors, 25-2. The Big Red also held the advantage in shots on goal (15-2) and penalty corners (7-4), but was thwarted for most of the afternoon by Hammanker, who finished with 13 saves.

The Big Red got on the board early in the contest when Katie Carlson carried the ball into the circle, spun away from a defender and found herself on the endline. She centered the ball back to Sam McILwrick, who sent it to the far post to put Cornell up, 1-0, in the seventh minute of action.

Cornell kept up the pressure, forcing Hammaker to make seven saves before the intermission, including one sequence late in the half when she made a pair of rapid fire saves off a penalty corner.

Brown earned the equalizer in the 40th minute when Rachel Lanouette's penalty corner shot was saved by Maddie Henry, but the rebound went to Gina Openshaw on the near post and she slotted it into the net.

Henry finished with five saves.

The Big Red has a busy weekend on tap, as it travels to No. 14 Princeton for a contest on Saturday, Oct. 28 at noon, before returning to Ithaca to play host to Lehigh at Marsha Dodson Field the following day, Sunday, Oct. 29 at 1:00 p.m. The Big Red will honor its five seniors – Katie Carlson, Kelly Johnson, Isabel Josephs, Krysten Mayers, and Sam McILwrick – prior to the game vs. the Mountain Hawks.
