PRINCETON, N.J. – No. 14 Princeton scored just 65 seconds into the contest and never looked back, defeating the Big Red field hockey team, 5-1, this afternoon at Bedford Field in Princeton, N.J. Cornell (8-6, 2-4 Ivy) will look to put the loss behind them quickly, as it returns to Ithaca for its Senior Day contest vs. Lehigh tomorrow, Sunday, Oct. 29 at 1 p.m. Prior to the game against the Mountain Hawks, the Big Red will honor its five seniors –
Katie Carlson,
Kelly Johnson,
Isabel Josephs,
Krysten Mayers, and
Sam McILwrick.
Princeton (10-6, 6-0 Ivy) held the significant advantage in shots (24-4), shots on goal (16-2) and penalty corners (8-3), and jumped out to an early 4-0 lead with a pair of goals from both Ryan McCarthy and Sophia Tornetta. Three of the Tigers first half goals came directly off penalty corners.
The play evened out a little in the second half and
Katie Carlson got Cornell on the board of a great feed from
Gabby DePetro in the 42nd minute, but a penalty stroke goal from McCarthy sealed the game, and at least a share of the Ivy League title, for the home team.
Cornell goalie
Maddie Henry finished the game with 10 saves and benefited from a fantastic defensive save from
Julianne Mangano, while Princeton Grace Baylis made one save to earn the victory.
