CANTON, N.Y. – Despite being the last Division I women's hockey team to begin its 2017-18 campaign, the No. 9 women's hockey team look to be in midseason form as it upset No. 7 St. Lawrence, 3-1, at Appleton Arena on Friday night.
Â
After a scoreless first period,
Jaime Bourbonnais earned the first goal of the year for Cornell (1-0-0, 1-0-0 ECAC Hockey), cashing in midway through the second frame off of assists from
Kristin O'Neill and
Brianna Veerman on a power play to go up, 1-0.
Â
Both teams would head into the final intermission period tied at 1-1 as St. Lawrence (2-3-2, 0-1-0 ECAC Hockey) got on the board after Kayla Vespa lit the lamp five minutes following Bourbonnais' strike.
Â
Maddie Mills' first-career goal would be an all-important one as she notched the game-winner in the third period on a power play with assists credited to Bourbonnais and Veerman to retake the lead, 2-1.
Paige Lewis would put the cherry on top for the team, putting in an empty-netter with one minute remaining in the contest to solidify the 3-1 result.
Â
Marlene Boissonnault was poised between the pipes, logging in 25 saves on the evening.
Â
The second test of the weekend awaits the team tomorrow as Cornell faces reigning NCAA champion Clarkson at 3 p.m. at Cheel Arena.
