Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Seniors Shine As Field Hockey Downs Lehigh, 4-0

ITHACA, N.Y. –The five seniors on the Cornell field hockey team didn't let the cold and rainy weather ruin their Senior Day celebration, as Katie Carlson, Kelly Johnson, Isabel Josephs, Krysten Mayers and Sam McILwrick each played a significant role in Cornell's 4-0 victory over Lehigh on Marsha Dodson Field.

Mayers had a hand in three of the Big Red's four goals, including two in a 24-second span to blow open the game. With the Big Red leading 1-0 after a goal in the 16th minute by freshman Grace Royer, Mayers took over, drawing a foul in the circle that led to a penalty stroke goal by Kirsten Pienaar at the 42:38 mark. Just 24 seconds later, Mayers laid out to redirect a cross from Royer and put the Big Red up, 3-0. Mayers then assisted on a goal by Carlson in the 61st minute to seal the scoring.

Defensively, McILwrick and Josephs anchored a backline that locked down the Mountain Hawks, allowing just four shots and two penalty corners, none of which came after halftime.

Behind the defense, Johnson made three saves to earn the Cornell-high 25th win of her career. She also moved into second place all-time in Big Red history with the eighth shutout of her career.

Cornell (9-6) dominated the contest, holding the significant edge in shots (20-4) and shots on goal (17-3), to go along with a 4-2 edge in penalty corners.

Lehigh (5-13) was kept in the contest early by goalie Paige Innarella, who made six of her nine saves in the first half to keep the Mountain Hawks within striking distance, trailing 1-0 at the intermission.

The Big Red will play its final game of the season when it travels to Dartmouth next weekend to take on the Big Green on Saturday, Nov. 4 at noon.
