BOSTON, Mass. -- Northeastern pulled away in the second half thanks to a 25-4 run and cruised to an 84-66 victory over Cornell on Saturday afternoon at Matthews Arena. The loss snapped a two-game win streak for the Big Red (3-4), while the Huskies improved to 4-4 on the season with its second consecutive victory over an Ivy League opponent.
Junior
Matt Morgan scored a game-high 24 points, becoming the first Cornell player in modern history to register six straight 20-point games, but Northeastern had a pair of players score more than 20 points and had four in double figures in the win. Donnell Greshman scored 22, Vasa Pusica netted 20 and Northeastern shot 56 percent from the floor overall while hitting 12-of-25 3-pointers on the afternoon.
Cornell held a 29-26 edge on the backboards, but 23 turnovers (leading to 23 Northeastern points) and a cols shooting stretch midway through the second half doomed the road team. The Big Red, which had shot 50 percent or better in seven straight halves of basketball after connecting on 52 percent in the first 20 minutes, made just 38 percent of its shots, including 1-of-6 from 3-point range, after halftime with 12 turnovers. Northeastern, meanwhile, hit 6-of-12 shots from beyond the arc and 57 percent overall after hafltime.
Wil Bathurst chipped in 10 points, while Steven Julian had eight points and five boards for the Big Red.
Cornell had 11 first half turnovers, but masked the errors by shooting 52 percent and was within arm's length at 39-36 at the break. It was still a two-point game (44-42) when
Matt Morgan hit a layup on a nifty cut and feed from Josh Warren. That was where the home team took over, starting an 11-0 run that pushed the lead into double figures. By the time it was over, the Huskies led by 23 with under 10 minutes to play, and Cornell would never make a serious run the rest of the way.
