Angello Scores Twice to Help Men's Hockey Past Brown, 5-3

Box Score (PDF)

ITHACA, N.Y. — Sophomore forward Anthony Angello scored twice and the Cornell men's hockey team concluded a busy stretch of games with a 5-3 victory over Brown in a rare Sunday matinee at Lynah Rink.

Cornell (16-6-3, 11-4-3 ECAC Hockey) moved into a tie for third place in the league standings with St. Lawrence at 25 points, which was idle Sunday. All ECAC Hockey teams have four games remaining in the regular season, and the Big Red trails first-place Union by two points and second-place Harvard by one point.

The Big Red, which entered the week ranked 12th in the USCHO.com poll and 15th in the USA TODAY/USA Hockey Magazine poll, is now 4-0-1 in its last five games — all played within the last 10 days. Angello now has five goals in his last five games.

Cornell shook off a sluggish start that saw Brown strike first on Andrew Doane's rebound goal just 3:28 into the game. The Bears had seven of the game's first nine shots on goal.

But Cornell equalized about five minutes later. Sophomore forward Mitch Vanderlaan won a puck along the halfwall and set up junior Alex Rauter from the left point. The forward-turned-defenseman snapped a shot toward goal that hit Buckles' skate in front of the net, then he spun to knock in the rebound for his seventh goal of the season.

Angello gave Cornell its first lead with 6:59 to play in the first. Sophomore forward Beau Starrett made a nice play in the neutral zone to start a two-on-two rush. Senior forward Jeff Kubiak then whipped a forehand across the middle that allowed Angello to bull his way past a defender before ripping a shot off the crossbar and in.

After a tight-to-the-vest first half of the second period, Angello scored his second of the game at the 11:15 mark. Kubiak and Starrett again had the assists, with the former setting up Angello for a one-timer from the right circle that beat Brown goalie Gavin Nieto to the near post.

That strike momentarily gave Angello the team lead in goals, but Vanderlaan matched him with his 10th of the year at the 15:02 mark to push the lead to 4-1. Quick passes from senior defenseman Patrick McCarron and senior forward Jake Weidner set him up from close range, and Vanderlaan lifted a shot over Nieto's glove.

But Brown didn't fade. Trey Dodd answered 70 seconds later, then Sam Lafferty scored an unassisted shorthanded goal 2:17 into the third period to whittle the Big Red's lead to one goal.

Cornell regrouped and eventually got an insurance goal from junior forward Trevor Yates with 13:04 to play. His shot from the left circle squeaked through Nieto for his 10th goal of the year — matching Angello and Vanderlaan for the team lead.

Senior goalie Mitch Gillam made 23 saves for the win, and sophomore defenseman Matt Nuttle had seven blocked shots on the night. Cornell was a dominant 38-19 on faceoffs.

The Big Red hits the road for the last time in the regular season, traveling to the North Country for games against St. Lawrence at 7 p.m. Friday and Clarkson at 7 p.m. Saturday.
