CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Harvard shot 60 percent from the floor overall and from beyond the 3-point arc to take a 20-point halftime lead and held off a Cornell surge for an 87-75 win on Saturday evening at Lavietes Pavilion. The Crimson swept the season series while improving to 16-7 (8-2 Ivy). The Big Red fell to 7-18 (3-7 Ivy) with the loss.
Four Cornell players reached double figures, including sophomore
Jack Gordon who matched his career high with 13 points. Classmate
Matt Morgan added 13 as well, while
Stone Gettings and
Josh Warren had 11 points apiece. The Big Red set a single-game school record by making all 20 free throw attempts, the most of any Cornell team without a miss. Senior
Robert Hatter added nine points,
Wil Bathurst had eight points and four assists and
JoJo Fallas recorded seven points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Harvard got a game-high 21 points from Seth Towns as four Crimson players reached double digits. Bryce Aiken added 17 points, Zena Edosomwan had 14 and Chris Lewis chipped in 10 points to go along with nine rebounds. Harvard shot 50 percent overall, held a 35-28 rebounding edge and got to the line 33 times, connecting on 26 attempts.
The teams were tied 8-8 after Hatter converted a three-point play on an acrobatic layup coming out of the first media timeout, but in a blink of an eye the Crimson were firmly in control. An 11-0 run gave the home team a double figure lead, and after Cornell clawed back within three (21-18), Harvard closed the half on a 15-2 run over the final 4:21 to enter the locker room with a 20-point lead (48-28).
The second half saw a different, much more poised Cornell team. The Big Red shot 48 percent, hit on 5-of-12 3-pointers, turned the ball over just four times and repeatedly found the open man offensively in scoring 47 points. Cornell ultimately cut a 23-point deficit to 10 with three and a half minutes left, but could get no closer.
