STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — The men's tennis team will take its first 4-0 start since 2004 on the road Sunday for a 1 p.m. match at Penn State. Cornell is coming off a two-day sweep of neutral-site matches last weekend at Harvard, defeating BYU on Saturday before rallying to top Tennessee, 4-3, on Sunday. Junior
Daniel Grunberger clinched the match for the Big Red with a three-set victory in No. 4 singles.
Grunberger and senior
Bernardo Casares Rosa's are both 4-0 in singles play now, and senior
Colin Sinclair is undefeated in the three matches that have reached completion. Casares and senior
Chris Vrabel — who is also ranked 62nd nationally in singles by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association — are also an unschathed 3-0 at No. 1 doubles, with the one unfinished match coming against a highly-ranked pair from the Volunteers.
Penn State started its dual season by participating in the North Carolina regional of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend, suffering a pair of 4-1 losses to Vanderbilt on Saturday and Notre Dame on Sunday. The Nittany Lions are actually hosting four matches this weekend, also taking on Cleveland State and Lehigh on Saturday and St. Bonaventure on Sunday evening after the tilt with the Big Red.
The Big Red is 26-12 all-time against the Nittany Lions, with the series taking on the particularly exciting trend of 4-3 final scores in recent year. The narrowest of margins has been the result in each of the last three meetings between the teams, with Penn State rallying for victories at Nos. 5 and 6 singles last year to win. Cornell came out on top in the two matches prior to that, including an upset victory in 2015 when
Penn State was ranked 27th. It is believed to be the highest-ranked team that Cornell has defeated in program history.
