ITHACA, N.Y. — The women's tennis team will play its final non-league matches of the season this week, hosting Colgate at 5 p.m. Wednesday and Binghamton at 1 p.m. Sunday at Reis Tennis Center.
Cornell (8-4), which is tabbed 59th in the nation by Slam.Tennis, enters this week's emergence from a two-week hiatus on a four-match winning streak. The Big Red swept Penn State, Stony Brook and Niagara in a busy March 4-5 weekend. The Big Red's statement victories to date were Feb. 12 against defending Ivy League champion Princeton — just the third in program history against the Tigers, and the first since 1996 — and a Feb. 20 win vs. Wichita State, an NCAA tournament qualifier last year.
The senior duo of
Marika Cusick (5-4) and
Alexandra D'Ascenzo (6-4) continues to buoy the top of the singles lineup while also teaming up to be the squad's top doubles entry (6-4). Junior captain
Priyanka Shah typically slots in at No. 3 singles with an 8-1 record, which is tied for the team lead in singles victories with junior
Lizzie Stewart (8-4).
Colgate (4-6) is coming off a split of its last matches against Division II opponents Hawaii at Hilo and BYU-Hawaii. The Big Red is 14-0 in all-time meetings against the Raiders, though the programs have not met since Cornell's 7-0 victory in 2011. Binghamton (4-11), which starts the weekend Saturday at Fordham, is coming off a pair of road losses to Siena and Akron. The Big Red is 16-2 all-time against the Bearcats.
Both upcoming matches are free to attend and open to the public.
