Brown Edges Men’s Lacrosse

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Cornell goalie Christian Knight made 14 saves and freshman Jeff Teat became just the third rookie in the history of the Ivy League to reach 60 points, but Brown freshman goalie Phil Goss stopped seven shots in the final quarter to hold off a furious Big Red comeback, as the Bears held on for a 13-10 victory at Stevenson-Pincince Field. The loss, coupled with both Brown and Penn's victories today, eliminates Cornell (4-9, 2-3) from the Ivy League Tournament.

Teat finished the game with three goals and four assists, his fifth straight game with at least five points, and his ninth overall with at least three points. He now sits in third place among Ivy League rookies for points on a season (61) and is just six points shy of Rob Pannell's school mark, set in the 2009 season.

Jordan Dowiak tallied two goals and three assists, while Clarke Petterson added one goal and two assists to keep the team's longest point-scoring streak alive at 10 games. In total, seven different Big Red registered at least one point, as Cornell assisted on 9-of-10 goals.

Brown (7-5, 3-2) was led by the reigning Tewaaraton Trophy award winner, Dylan Molloy, with four goals and three assists. Luke McCaleb finished with three goals and Stephen Hudak and Michael Penepinto tallied two goals apiece.

Goss, who leads the nation in saves per game, finished with 14.

After trailing by one at halftime, Cornell knotted the game at 7-7 just two minutes into the third quarter on a goal from Jake McCulloch. From there, the Bears took control of the contest, as they won the ensuing face-off and scored just 38 seconds later to take the lead for good. Brown controlled possession for much of the third quarter and limited the Big Red's opportunities as the home team went on a 5-1 run.

Teat tallied two goals early in the fourth quarter to cut Brown's lead to 12-10 with 7:44 to play, but Goss made several incredible saves, including two in the final three minutes, and Molloy tacked on a late empty net goal to seal the 13-10 victory.

Brown had the advantage in shots (44-38) and shots on goal (27-24). The Bears had a significant edge in face-offs, winning 22-of-27, with Ted Ottens taking 21-of-26, but despite that lopsided advantage the Bears had just two extra ground balls (40-38).

Both teams turned the ball over 20 times on a rain soaked afternoon with Cornell having 11 caused turnovers to the Bears' 10. Walt Gahagan and Marshall Peters led the Big Red with two apiece.

Cornell cleared the ball 25-of-28 times and held Brown to a 20-of-26 performance, with one failed clear leading directly to a goal from Petterson, off a pass from Teat, to tie the game at 5-5.

The Big Red scored one man-up goal (1-of-2), while holding a highly potent Brown man-up unit to an 0-of-2 performance.

Cornell will play its final regular season game and honor its senior class when it welcomes Princeton to Schoellkopf Field on Saturday, April 29 at 3 p.m.
