Shen Leads Big Red To Top Of Podium At Cortland

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cornell gymnastics team boosted its team score nearly two full points from a solid opening-week performance as the Big Red took first in a triangular meet with Cortland and Southern Connecticut State on Sunday afternoon at Whitney T. Corey Gymnasium. The Big Red scored a 192.500 to capture the meet by more than 2.5 points while winning three individual events and the all-around.

Amy Shen won the all-around with a 38.875, the third-highest total in school history. She won individual events on bars (9.825, No. 9 all-time at Cornell) and tied with teammate Maci Prescott for a win on vault with dual 9.725's. She also took fifth on beam (9.650) and was sixth on floor (9.675).

Cornell went 1-2-3-4 on vault to close the meet, extending its lead by nearly a full point on the final rotation. Prescott and Shen tied for first, with Kelsy Kurfirst (9.650) and Natalia Nottingham (9.625) rounding out the top four. In all, six of the top seven finishers in the event wore Cornell leotards.

As strong as the finish was, the start was just as impressive. The Big Red took the top five spots on bars and also had six of the top seven finishers on the event, and the team's first rotation score of 48.775 cleared the field by a full point. With Shen atop the field, Kaitlin Green (9.800), Christina Luniewicz (9.750), Kurfirst (9.700) and Lauren Wong (9.700) also ranked among the top four.

Claire Haklik was the third event winner, as her 9.725 tied her with two other gymnasts atop the podium. The Big Red had four in the top seven, with Samantha Henry leading the pack in fourth (9.700).

Green was the top finisher on beam in third with a 9.700. Cornell had three finishers in the top five overall., with Shen and Malia Mackey matching scores (9.650) to share fifth.

The Big Red heads to Temple next weekend to compete against the Owls, Ithaca College and Southeast Missouri State on Sunday, Jan. 28 at 1 p.m.
