Balanced Big Red Closes Non-Conference Slate With Win

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Four players scored in double figures and the bench paid big contributions as Cornell closed out its 2017-18 non-conference schedule with a 93-69 win over Central Penn on Friday afternoon at Newman Arena. The Big Red enters league play with a 6-7 mark, while the Knights slipped to 7-9 on the year.

The tandem of juniors Matt Morgan (21 points, five rebounds, four assists, two steals, two blocked shots) and Stone Gettings (15 points, nine rebounds, six assists, two steals, one block) again led the way, but they had plenty of help. Junior Jack Gordon scored a career-high 15 points, matching Ryan Wittman's school record with his five 3-pointers without a miss. Freshmen Bryan Knapp (12 points) and Jimmy Boeheim (nine points, eight rebounds) also posted career scoring highs. The Big Red assisted on 23 baskets, hit 13-of-29 3-pointers, blocked 10 shots and controlled the game after the opening minutes despite some rough patches. Junior Steven Julian had three of the 10 blocks and chipped in four points and six boards, Terrance McBride had four points and five assists, Joel Davis notched six points, three rebounds and two assists and 11 players got into the scorebook on the evening.

Randy Dupont had 16 points to lead four double figure scorers for Central Penn. Joel Zola and Juwan Gooding each had 11, while Noah Baylor had 10 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Central Penn had 16 offensive rebounds, outscoring the Big Red 15-9 on second chance points, and was even for the night against the bigger Big Red (43-43).

Central Penn fought through inclement weather just to get into town on Friday morning, and spent nearly the entire evening battling from behind. The Knights never let the Big Red run away with the game, but the home team was always firmly in control. Cornell jumped out to a 10-point lead five minutes in, saw the deficit cut back to four and then went on an 11-0 run that featured five straight points by Knapp to push the lead to 15. The Knights never got back within 11 and watched the lead balloon to as many as 28 late in the second half.

The Big Red limited the visitors to an opponent season-low .315 shooting, including just 7-of-24 from 3-point range (29 percent). The team's ball movement masked 16 turnovers, and its 10 blocks and seven steals limited the damage of Central Penn's decided advantage on the offensive glass. With Ivy League play set to begin next weekend at Penn and Princeton to kick off a three-game conference road swing, head coach Brian Earl's will enter the 14-game regular season two games ahead of last year's non-conference record.

Notes to Know

• Morgan has now hit at least one 3-pointer in 23 straight contests, and multiple shots beyond the arc in 18 consecutive outings.
• Gettings flirted with the school's first-ever triple-double with six points, seven rebounds and six assists by halftime.
• Gordon's 5-for-5 effort from beyond the arc tied Ryan Wittman's performance against Bryant in 2010 for the school single-game percentage mark.
Steven Julian had at least three blocked shots for the fifth time in the last six contests.
• The Big Red's 23 team assists is tied for 12th on the school's single-game list, while the 10 blocked shots stands fourth all-time.
• Cornell's 13 3-point field goals were good for 17th all-time.
• Cornell improved to 4-1 at home this season, surpassing last season's win total at Newman Arena (3-8).
• The Big Red is now 3-0 with freshman Terrance McBride in the starting lineup.
• Head coach Brian Earl's team has scored at least 75 points in five straight game, the longest such streak since six consecutive spanning the final three games of 2006-07 and the first three of the 2007-08 seasons.

Next Up
• The Big Red opens up the 14-game Ivy League regular season schedule with the always-treacherous Penn-Princeton road trip beginning with a visit to the Palestra on Friday, Jan. 12 at 8 p.m. to meet the Quakers.
• Cornell then heads to Princeton the following night for a 7 p.m. tip against the Tigers on ESPN3.
• Since 1961-62, only 11 teams have swept the Penn-Princeton road trip in 332 opportunities — Cornell has only accomplished the feat once (2007-08).
