PRINCETON, N.J. – The Big Red volleyball team ran into a hot Princeton squad that swept Cornell out of the top spot in the Ivy League standings, winning 25-21, 25-17, 25-17. With the loss, the Big Red falls to 9-7 overall and 4-2 in the conference to slip behind the first-place Tigers (12-5, 5-1) and Yale (11-4, 5-1).
Carla Sganderlla and
Madison Baptiste finished with 12 and 10 kills, respectively, with Sganderlla hitting a team-best .250 (12-4-32) on the evening. No other Big Red player finished with more than five kills as the team hit .183 for the contest.
Libero
Lily Barber finished with a match-high 11 digs, while Baptiste tallied 10 for her second consecutive double-double.
Setters
Zoe Chamness and
Katie Randolph posted 17 and 12 assists, respectively.
The Tigers hit .352 on the evening and were led by Devon Peterkin (16 kills) and Clare Lenihan (11 kills). Lenihan's efforts were particularly impressive with her .579 hitting percentage (11-0-19) pacing the home team.
The visitors opened the first set with a big solo block from Baptiste to take a 1-0 lead, but Princeton scored four unanswered to take the lead and never trailed again in the match. Cornell threatened in each set, but was unable to challenge the outcome.
The Big Red is back in action tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 13 when it travels to Penn to take on the Quakers at 5 p.m. at the Palestra.
