Princeton Spoils Volleyball Senior Night With Sweep

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Princeton volleyball team swept the Big Red, 3-0, to spoil Cornell's Senior Night this evening in Newman Arena. The Tigers won 25-23, 25-15, 25-18 to improve to 17-6 overall and 10-2 in the Ivy League. With the loss, the Big Red fell to 13-9 overall and 8-4 in the conference.

Cornell senior Carla Sganderlla hit a team-high .300 for the match with seven kills and just one error on 20 attempts, while Samanta Arenas led the team with 13 kills. Libero Lily Barber and setter Zoe Chamness both tallied 13 digs, with Chamness finishing the night with 28 assists on Cornell's 35 kills.

Princeton was led by Maggie O'Connell and Clare Lenihan's 10 kills apiece, while Alexa Underwood chipped in nine. Tiger libero Cameron Dames had a match-high 19 digs.

Cornell got into an eight-point hole in the first set (19-11), but an 8-1 run that featured six kills from Arenas brought the Big Red back within one point (20-19). The teams traded points to 24-23 but Cornell could not find the equalizer and a kill from Caroline Sklaver handed the visitors the 25-23 victory.

Princeton was big at the net (four blocks) and tough from the service box (four aces) in the second set, as it held the Big Red to an .067 hitting percentage to earn the win. The teams traded points to 5-5 before consecutive kills from Sganderlla put Cornell up, 7-5. A Big Red service error ended the run and led to five consecutive Tiger points to make it a 10-7 game. Princeton never trailed again en route to the 25-15 victory.

The Tigers jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the third set and then held off a late Big Red surge as the home team made it a 20-18 contest following a pair of Princeton miscues, but could not come all the way back as the Tigers scored the final five points of the set to win, 25-18.

The Big Red wraps up the regular season when it heads to Ivy League leader Yale and Brown on Friday, Nov. 9 and Saturday, Nov. 10, respectively. The game with the Bulldogs is slated for 7 p.m., while Cornell will face the Bears at 6 p.m.
