ITHACA, N.Y. -- Cornell hit 16 3-pointers to run out to a big lead, then held off a late Longwood rally to secure a 70-64 victory on Monday evening at Newman Arena. The Big Red evened its record at 5-5, while the Lancers fell to 8-5 with the loss.
Matt Morgan scored 17 points and
Jimmy Boeheim netted 12, including a career-high four 3-pointers, as the home team shot 50 percent from beyond the arc on 32 shots. Seven different players hit a trey, with Morgan connecting on five and both
Jake Kuhn and
Troy Whiteside hitting a pair. Cornell had 19 assists on its 22 baskets, but committed a season-high 20 turnovers and shot under 40 percent for the game, including 6-of-24 (25 percent) from two-point range. The Big Red defense showed well, turning Longwood over 21 times and limiting them to 39 percent shooting overall and 28 percent from beyond the arc.
Shabooty Phillips had 18 points and 11 rebounds, Jordan Cintron scored 14 points with eight rebounds off the bench and JaShaun Smith had 11 along with three blocked shots. The Lancers outscored the Big Red 24-4 on second chance points and 32-10 in the paint, nearly erasing an 18-point second half deficit in the process.
The Big Red led nearly the entire game, though it had to sweat out a Longwood comeback for the second straight year. After hitting 10-of-20 3-pointers in the first 20 minutes, including four in the span of two minutes that turned a two-point deficit into a nine-point lead, the home team went into the break in command and leading 36-26. Morgan drained a 3-pointer at the horn to give him four in the final 10 minutes of the half, and the senior entered halftime with 12 points, five rebounds and four assists.
Cornell extended its lead to as many as 18 (51-33) with 12:30 remaining after
Riley Voss found Boehim for another trey. It was still a 14-point game (55-41) with 7:31 left, but the Lancers kept fighting. getting within four (55-51) thanks to a 10-0 run, holding Cornell scoreless for 5:08 until Boeheim connected on a dagger, step-back 3-pointer with 2.23 left. The Big Red hit 8-of-10 free throws in the final 68 seconds, including 5-of-6 from
Terrance McBride, to earn the victory.
