ITHACA, N.Y. – Dave Sarachan '76 was announced as the head coach of the United Soccer League's (USL) North Carolina FC the team announced Monday. Sarachan had previously served as the United States Men's National Team's (USMNT) interim coach for the past year.
Sarachan, a 2009 inductee of the Cornell Athletic Hall of Fame, was a member of the men's soccer team during the 1974 and 1975 seasons. During his time as a player for the Big Red he was an All-America honorable mention, an All-New York State first team and an All-Ivy second-team selection. Additionally in his senior campaign, he helped lead the Big Red to the NCAA quarterfinals.
After playing professionally for six seasons, Sarachan returned to Cornell to serve as an assistant coach for the Big Red in 1983. After a brief stint as an assistant under Bruce Arena '73 at Virginia from 1984-87, Sarachan returned once again to Cornell where he took the head coaching position. He guided the Big Red to an overall 64-63-16 record in his time at Cornell. His top season came in 1995 when his team went 15-2-1 and advanced to the NCAA tournament for the first time in 15 years.
This marks Sarachan's first head coaching position in the USL. The Rochester, New York, native has had two stints in various roles with the USMNT with the first being from 1999-2002 as an assistant and the most recent being from 2017-18 both as an assistant and interim coach. Prior to his most recent appointment with the USMNT, Sarachan served as an assistant with the LA Galaxy from 2008-16 and was the head coach of the Chicago Fire from 2002-07. He also served as an assistant for DC United from 1997-99.
