ITHACA, N.Y. -- For the seventh time in eight years, the Cornell men's swimming and diving team has captured the Ithaca College Bomber Invitational. This time, it came home with first place honors in all 21 events.
Cornell scored 1,861 points to easily outdistance SUNY Geneseo (1,206) and Rochester (767) in the team's final outing of the fall. The Big Red will now take more than a month off for exams, holidays and winter break training before kicking off championship season in January.
In all, 12 different Big Red team members won an individual event, with Jack Mahoney winning three - the 50 and 100 free and tying teammate Alex Huang in the 100 fly. Other multi-event winners included
Koppi Kolyvek in the 200 and 500 free, Huang in the 100 and 200 butterfly and Brett Hebert in the 1-meter and 3-meter dives.
Ricardo Martinez jumped into the school's top 10 marks with his 1:49.57 in the 200 IM,m the seventh-fastest swim ever at Cornell, while Jack Mahoney's blazing 20.09 in the 50 free was the third-fastest for a Big Red swimmer.
Ryan Brown shaved .01 off his personal best to win the 100 breast, while
Ryan Schildwachter's 55.09 in the event slots No. 8 all-time at Cornell. Schildwachter (2:02.34) also moved to eighth in the 200 breast. Will Hrabchak (1:48.44) finished second in the 200 back to teammate
Van Cates (1:47.24) to slide into the career top 10 times in the event. The 800 free relay featuring Zhi Min Chua, Kolyvek,
Jack McSorley and
Hunter Hitchens won in the seventh-best time in school history in 6:39.88
Cornell returns to competition when it welcomes Columbia on Jan. 13, 2019 at 11 a.m. at Teagle Pool.
