Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

No. 5 Women’s Hockey Blows Past Union, 5-0

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The women's hockey team skated past Union for a 5-0 shutout win on Friday night at Messa Rink. The first period was highlighted by two short-handed goals by Kristin O'Neill and Lenka Serdar. Joie Phelps, Amy Curlew and Finley Frechette each added in goals of their own to notch the five-goal decision.

The shutout victory was Marlene Boissonnault's sixth of the season, the fifth most in the nation. The blank slate now ties her for second all-time at Cornell for shutouts in a single season.

O'Neill got things off to a fast start seven minutes and 28 seconds in, earning her shorty unassisted. Her man-down score is her fourth of the season and puts her tied for first nationally along with Maureen Murphy of Providence. The sophomore now has nine short-handed goals in her career.

Serdar was up next with her shorthanded goals. She received helpers from Jaime Bourbonnais and Sarah Knee 12:17 into the first frame. Joie Phelps closed out first 20 minutes of action with yet another goal to make it 3-0 in favor of Cornell. Paige Lewis was credited with an assist.

Early on in the second period, Curlew nabbed her fourth goal of the season with assists from Grace Graham and Serdar and Finley Frechette earned her second goal in two straight games to close out the scoring with 1:42 to play. Hanna Mutschelknaus and Pippy Gerace were credited with the assists.

Despite the blowout score, the shot differential between the two teams was not as big as one would expect with the Big Red holding a 25-19 advantage.

Boissonnault stopped all 19 shots sent her way while Union's Amelia Murray made 16 saves in over 45 minutes of action. Coco Francis stopped four shots in nearly 15 minutes between the pipes.

The team plays its final game of the regular season tomorrow, Feb. 17 at Rensselaer. The game is set to begin at 3 p.m.
