Quick Start, Defense Pushes Men's Hoops To Win At Brown

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Cornell ran off the game's first 13 points and led wire-to-wire behind its best defensive effort of the Ivy League season, picking off Brown 78-60 on Friday evening at the Pizzitola Sports Center. The Big Red moved into a tie for third place in the Ancient Eight standings midway through conference season, improving to 9-11 (3-4 Ivy). The Bears slipped to 10-10 (3-4 Ivy).

Junior Stone Gettings had 23 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and three blocked shots and Matt Morgan scored 19 with seven rebounds and three assists, but it was Cornell's defense that snapped a five-game road losing streak. The Big Red limited a high-scoring Bears' offense to 31 percent shooting, including 28 percent in the second half, and never saw the lead dip below double figures in the game's final 33:43. Steven Julian chipped in 10 points and Joel Davis had three steals and two blocks.Jack Gordon posted eight points, five rebounds and four assists in 21 steady minutes off the bench. Freshman Jimmy Boeheim had seven points and four rebounds, all coming as part of a spark in the first half.

The visitors were as efficient on offense as it was on defense, shooting 55 percent from the floor, including 61 percent in the decisive first half.

Desmond Cambridge had a game-high 26 points for the home team, though it came on 24 shots. He was the lone double figure scorer for Brown. Obi Okolie had eight points, eight rebounds and three assists in the loss.

The first half was all Cornell with the visitors jumping out to a 13-0 lead and cruising to halftime with a 47-35 edge. The defense was exceptional, limiting the Bears to 36 percent shooting and to just 3-of-11 from beyond the arc. Gettings scored 15 points and added five rebounds and three assists, while Morgan had 11 points and three boards. Cornell shot 60 percent in the first half and made 5-of-12 3-pointers in the first 20 minutes.

The second half was more of the same, as the Big Red led by as many as 21 and never saw the lead dip below 10 points. Only offensive rebounding (20) and second chance opportunities (18-5 Brown advantage) kept the lead from growing more.
