BRONX, N.Y. – The baseball team scored three runs in the first two innings and held Fordham to four hits on the day, but the Rams took advantage of 10 walks from Big Red pitchers and four errors in the field to rally for a 5-3 victory on Sunday at Houlihan Park.
Junior
Will Simoneit drove in a pair of runs in the first inning with a single to right, then freshman
Ramon Garza scored an unearned run in the second to give Cornell a 3-1 lead. But the Big Red offense stalled with just one single after the third inning. That belonged to senior
Ryan Krainz in the ninth, who finished the day 2-for-4 with a run scored and a walk. Senior
Ellis Bitar followed Krainz's single with a walk to represent the tying run on first base with one out. After Fordham got a called third strike for the second out, the game ended when junior
Josh Arndt drove a ball into the gap in right-center, only to watch it be snagged by center fielder Billy Godrick on a diving catch.
Fordham (10-5-1) was 6-for-6 on stolen-base attempts, including three in a two-run fifth inning to tie the game at 3. An RBI double by Godrick in the sixth puts the hosts ahead for good.
Having now played nine straight on the road to open the season, Cornell (1-8) is scheduled to debut at Hoy Field next weekend with four games against Niagara. The series will feature twin doubleheaders starting at noon Saturday and Sunday.
