ITHACA, N.Y. – Cornell sophomore
Dylan Higgins hit a driving layup with 0.4 seconds showing on the clock to hand the Big Red women's basketball team a Senior Day victory over Dartmouth, 51-49, this afternoon in Newman Arena. The basket capped a career-day by Higgins, who finished with a career-high 16 points, thanks to a 4-of-5 performance from 3-point range.
Not to be outdone by the underclassmen, senior
Christine Ehland was determined to go out with a win, as she finished with her first career double-double with 12 points and a career-high 12 rebounds. The Big Red's other seniors – Janee Dennis and
Jamie Hill – both chipped in three points, with Dennis handing out two assists and registering one steal, while Hill grabbed three rebounds and had one assist.
Although she was held to just four points,
Samantha Widmann tallied 10 rebounds to go along with three assists, three blocked shots and two steals. With her two steals, Widmann moves into fifth place in Cornell history for steals in a single season with 60.
Dartmouth (15-12, 7-7 Ivy) was led by Kate Letkewicz and Cy Lippold with 17 and 12 points, respectively.
Cornell held the dominant 37-26 advantage on rebounds, but turned the ball over 22 times to the Big Green's 15 miscues.
Higgins and Ehland were extremely efficient, hitting 12 of 19 shots to help the Big Red finish at 43.1 percent from the floor (22-51) and 38.9 percent from beyond the arc (7-18). Dartmouth became the fifth team this season that the Big Red held to below 50 points, as the Big Green connected on just 36.4 percent overall (20-55) and just 21.1 percent from 3-point range (4-19).
Although the game featured seven ties and 10 lead changes, the early moments seemed lie the Big Red might run away with it as Cornell jumped out to an early nine-point lead (13-4) on a trey from Hill, the first and only field goal of the oft-injured senior's career.
Dartmouth closed the first and opened the second quarter with eight unanswered points to take its first lead of the game, 15-13, at the 8:49 mark. A 3-pointer from Higgins ended the run and the teams traded baskets until back-to-back jumpers by Ehland and a trey from Dennis pushed Cornell's lead to 30-21 at halftime.
The Big Green managed to erase that advantage with just 4:00 to go in the third quarter on a 3-poiner from Letkewicz and the teams went into the final break tied at 37-37.
Dartmouth scored the first seven points of the fourth period to go up, 44-37, with just 7:34 to play, but back-to-back jumpers from Ehland and
Samantha Clement, followed by a trey from
Danielle Jorgenson and tough runner in the lane by
Halley Miklos restored the one-point lead to the Big Red.
The game saw two more ties down the stretch as the teams exchanged big shots before Higgins heroics at the buzzer handed Cornell the victory.
The Big Red finished the season with a7-20 record overall and a mark of 3-11 in the Ivy League.
