Early Offense Helps Softball To 5-3 Sunday Win At Yale

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Cornell softball jumped out to a four-run lead and held off Yale in the seventh for a 5-3 victory on Sunday afternoon at DeWitt Family Stadium. The Big Red evened its Ivy record at 3-3 and improved to 8-12 overall, while Yale fell to 7-18 (4-5 Ivy).

Sophomore Bridgette Rooney hit a home run and Kate Jencarelli was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored. Lisa Nelson earned the win in the circle after allowing just two earned runs in the complete game win, striking out two and scattering 10 hits.

After being shut out twice against the Bulldogs on Saturday, Cornell bats wasted little time getting on the board. After leaving two runner on base in the second, Rooney ended Cornell's 15-inning scoreless streak against the Bulldogs by leading off the second inning with a solo home run, triggering a three-run inning. A Brianna Straley walk and a single by Sarah Murray led to the Big Red scoring runs on a throwing error and a groundout to make it 3-0.

Straley singled in a run in the third to make it 3-0, then after Yale got on the board in the third, the Big Red got the run back when Jencarelli singles and Madeline Avery tripled her home with two outs to go up 5-1.

Nelson stranded six runners over the final four innings of work, including one with the tying run at second in the seventh after Yale got within 5-3 thanks to a four-hit inning.

The Big Red continues its Spring Break trip when it visits Mount St. Mary's on Tuesday, April 3 at 3 p.m. for a non-conference doubleheader.
